e*bay makes a favour in your error collect $239!

Has anyone actually had an e*bay/pay*pal error in their favour?

I had an e*bay dispute with a seller and after e*bay dispute resolution I returned it (as instructed by ebay).....now here's where it got a bit mad....

E*bay sent me a payment in US $ for the value of the item....then the original transaction as refunded...

Therefore I have an extra $239 e*bay US $ in my paypal account....

I've tried to contact e*bay about it and they've plamed me off saying the case is closed....

    What happens next?

(Oh and the seller has marked my item as sent again, so I wonder if he's sending me a correct item!)

    I wouldn't do anything, personally.

If you've informed them that they've made a mistake, then you're hardly trying to con them. I'd keep hold of the money though, as it wouldn't surprise me if a couple of months down the line they wanted it back again.

I agree, the only trouble is if I make any big purchases or they take their monthly fees, they'll eat into this balance....mind you I guess I can't be blamed....

True, but if you never physically spend that $239 then you'll always have it available to give back to them if asked. In other words, I wouldn't be withdrawing it and buying myself a new graphics card with it, leaving myself with nothing to pay them back with.

And no, I don't think I've ever found Paypal to be "nice". It honestly wouldn't shock me if you woke up one day to find your Paypal account $239 down because they suddenly noticed and then removed the funds without informing you. I don't know the legal details, but it seems as though Paypal isn't governed by anything - as far as I can gather they can take your money, withhold your money, delay your money - whatever they want, purely because they think it's the right thing to do. I don't trust them an inch.

I wouldn't sleep well at night if i knew they had refunded me by accident, i would call them again and make it as clear as possible, otherwise as pointed out in a few months time they will realise.

Ps. Never found them to be nice, annoying though.

I had an email from e*bay (UK) who were trying to call e*bay (US) and they said they were in the call queue for too long so they had to hang up.

I'm just leaving the US $ in my account, though I've technically spent $30 so far......

    Let's see......

Id say just transfer it to ur bank, if it costs money to keep cash in paypal then you should do that and leave it as spare. Or setup a new bank account with a cashback site, make £50 and keep it safe in there!.

    The main problems are:
    1. ebay can claim back money from your paypal account whenever they want, so it comes from you bank account ot linked credit card...this isn't so much a problem for me

    2. The money is in US $ and is 'cash' in my Paypal account this means that anything I buy from ebay or ebay fees gets taken from this 'cash' before I can get the option of using my bank account or credit card...this just means that I'll end up spending this US $ sooner or later......

    3. It's the reputation risk of ebay/paypal taking some punative action against my account....this would be a problem

Re: e*bay makes a favour in your error collect $239!

I doubt they'd that any action agaist your account as you've not been the one to up
however as snootyjim said, a couple of months down the line they could realise the mistake and want the money back.
If your paypal is linked to your bank accout or credit card then they can just take money stright out of your accout (if there's not enough in your paypal account) and they can do this with out warning.
Like say the end of the month before you've been paid, which could then end up with you going overdrawn and your bank chargeing you.

The only time they might get uppty with you is if you take the money out or spend it, and your accout is not linked to an exrternal account, so your paypal would effectively go negative.
