Windows 7 just works, which isn't something I expected to say after Vista. The only problems I had was going to 64bit initially, as driver support wasn't as good for older hardware. As soon as I rolled back to 32bit, I've not had a single problem.
I've tried Linux on a number of occasions because I was curious to see what the fuss was about (plus it's free). There's just too much work involved to do relatively simple things. I don't doubt it's power and flexibility, but I just don't need the hassle.
All I want from my OS is to leave me alone and let me get on with my life. Windows 7 does a superb job of that, which is why I have installed it on my main machine and 2 laptops.

I like Windows 7 too, its pretty excellent - from an End-User POV.
I did run various Linuxes on my Laptop and Desktop for a while, but I've kinda' gone off the newer debian-based distros lately, mainly down to how they look/how particular parts of the GUI function, but I also seemed to be having some performance issues.
I will however reinstall a Linux at some point and play about with it, see if I can fix those issues - if i can then my vote will probably shift back to Linux!

It's the home networking of W7 I like. After years of struggling with XP and Vista, this seems in a new class. The question is a no-brainer without OSX in the lineup.
Society's to blame,
Or possibly Atari.
Personally Windows 2000 is the master.
Everything good about xp but without the bloat.
am i right in thinking the beta version was free, and anyone who had the beta got free updates and thus a free Microsoft OS?
im still on XP pro, vista never interested me, and W7 is expensive.
The beta was indeed free and had updates as normal however it had an expiry date which I believe prevents it loading into the desktop. So whilst it was free it was only fully functional to that point.
I've got to vote in the poll for Windows 7, whilst I really didnt have any major problems with Vista, 7 is thus far fantastic. I've really had little exposure to linux so that makes me very biased. I have used Acorn OS if that counts ...
I've been using Win 7 since it first came out as a beta I really quite enjoy it. One thing that hasn't worked was an extraordinarily cheap bluetooth dongle. Other than that, flawless. Then again, I can't say I've ever even seen Linux or another OS so perhaps my opinion is a tad one sided!
But they all seem incredibly arrogant and smug.

All the people who are saying things like "linux is too difficult" would be saying exactly the same about Win 7 had they grown up using linux. Having used various linux distros as my main OS for quite a number of years, I find the way MS does things quite backward at times.
Don't get me wrong, I think that 7 is a very nice OS (my partner uses it and I'm the tech support bloke for her), but some things just aren't right (for example UAC is a bit of a pain when trying to use a shell... and CMD has always been rubbish). Each OS has its pros and cons and each will appeal to different people.
I've experimented with most different OSs, and my opinion is split:
- When I was a student, I spent hours installing and configuring Ubuntu (and many different flavours of Linux) and I really enjoyed it. Some of the stuff you can do on it is still quite a long way ahead of Windows. That said, I've never only had a Linux OS, always dual booted
- Windows 7 is my current OS of choice. I don't have the time or inclination anymore to have to continually tinker with Linux to get even the simplest of things to work. W7 does just work. It's very fast, quite pretty, and easy to use. I also managed to get in on the £50 preorder deal, so really not that expensive.
If you've got the time, Linux is great. It's not so much of an OS, more of a hobby. If you just want to use your computer for normal tasks, and don't mind spending a bit of money, W7 is definately a better choice. I wish it wasn't true, but it is!
