    Blogging?

Right, Blogging, I know it's a bit old hat, but there is so much going on for me this year I want to capture the experience.

    My two major projects are:
Firstly, I'm leaving behind a successful engineering career at the ripe old age of... well old & doing a nursing degree.
Secondly, I aim to clothe myself this year entirely from eBay purchases (just a whim).

So, what's what in the blogging world? Is it easier to use my own webspace, or use a proprietary service?

    Re: Blogging?

Start off by one of the free services such as Blogger or Tumblr and see how you go. If its starts to pick up then maybe something a bit pro, but either Blogger or Tumblr will have everything all setup and ready to blog.

Also interested in this, for different reasons. I quite enjoy the sweary musings of The Devil and his conservative cohorts. I'm equally angry, and sweary, but I'm a liberal and I don't see anyone putting our case forward with powerful invective and copious expletives. So I thought I might do it myself.

I think that point may be self explaining?

    back on topic:

If you reckon you can keep up with it then I think blogging is well worth it. I used to blog a lot when my life wasn't quite so comfortable as it is now, and I found the experience extremely cathartic. A year or so ago I then decided to write a tech blog trying to explain the current trends in tech news in non-techy language. I lasted about 2 months, because I wasn't really bothered by it. I keep thinking I should start again, but I don't have much to say (partly because I'm getting a lot of interaction out of Hexus, and I say a lot of stuff that's on my mind on here).

My last blog was on blogger and I found it very easy to set up and get started (and it's now linked itself to my google account so I could no doubt start blogging from my HTC Magic if I so desired!), so I'd recommend them to start with. If you find yourself getting into it them maybe look at starting hosting your own blog later.

    Re: Blogging?

My last blog (years ago) was on Blogger, but I would like to restart fresh. I know quite a few people using/moving to Wordpress so I'll check it out. For those who've used it, is there much benefit from hosting it yourself instead of using the free server?

    Re: Blogging?

I have used Blogger and Wordpress.

Blogger is perhaps more simple, and certainly appears more popular, out of all the blogs that I read, the majority seem to be on Blogger, However I actually prefer Wordpress, I think it has better free statistics, and because afaik it is less popular with your average blogger, it seems easier to get the blog title that you actually want. I ran the same blog on both for a while (my wordpress one had the title I actually wanted!) to compare, and I do prefer Wordpress.

If you want to use Blogger, but change your mind and want to try Wordpress at a later date, it is really easy, as you can set up for all your posts to be transferred to your new Wordpress Blog.

    Re: Blogging?

Another vote for blogger - it's linked to Picasa and Gmail meaning I can upload photos directly from my phone (SE C905) and they're automatically saved in my Picasa album and published to t'blog.
