Why? Is there honestly an easier and more cost effective way to track data from multiple sources at once? Anything trying to shift Excel would probably be custom made, require specific user training, would have to be debugged and at the end of the day, would end up looking mostly like Excel due to familiarity.

That's MS Office's strength IMO, it's familiar, there's many people who come ready trained (or like me can read the damn help files ) and there's a *lot* of documentation out there to overcome bugs.

Re: Would the world stop running without MS Office?

You raise a fair point, except for one thing...

when i was 7 we had the zx spectrum, the world was as far as i know, still working

now, we have windows 7, possibly named after the first time i got a computer, maybe not, but i reckon the world still works...

as a contingency plan, i have an old Amiga sitting by, just in case the rest of the word decide that the internet has lost control, and that noone, ever, can communicate in a manner other than the good old postman, who will of course see to your every need every day, at a cost and at the length of time it takes.

btw, i will be playing cannon fodder when your boss demotes you to the mail room!

Strangely, despite it been kinda my job, for most things it really is the best solution.

Some of the biggest computer science attroicities in 'the square mile' i've seen have been with rather curious use of the R project....

How long did it take to send pounds from a Nat West branch in London to Dirhams in the UAE back then? I seem to recall that it was around 2-4 weeks. Now I can do it in one day if I do it in the morning.

It may not be important to you, but for international people the advent of decent office technology was a lifesaver.
