One of my friends said to me on msn "The new firefox update is cool, love the feature they added when you press F14." It fooled me

I was mostly busy doing Uni work I did have a moment when I thought that maybe that days deadline could possibly be an april fool. Unfortunately it wasn't.

I did get a chuckle out of Google's various stunts. Their various different timings on the search pages were amusing (0.84 nanofortnights, 0.09 nanocenturies, 1.21 gigawats!)

Did anyone see their "Translator for Animals" android app page? I'm not too sure of the extent of the joke, if it was just a joke page or if they actually made a joke app. My phone couldn't find anything on the market or from the QR code link either way.

Myself and the rest of our department are constantly at the mercy of the client facing departments that have a wonderfully warped perspective of the level of difficulty in producing websites with all sorts of fanciful features (in an equally fanciful space of time).

So a colleague and I built The Website Automation Tool which was a simple web form with a selection of common things that clients want that are apparently quick and easy to implement (e.g. forums, 'CMSable' content, blogs, 'social networking', etc), and some that we added for fun (e.g. 'Inaccessible' under accessibility options, and 'TomTom sat nav' under browser support). The idea was that you pick what you wanted and hit the 'Build Website' button and the automated tool takes care of the rest - the design, build, testing, the whole nine yards. The 'user' was then directed to a holding page with an animated 'under construction' GIF from 1999. It would drop us an email (a 'T.W.A.T. Alert', if you will) with the user name and website spec they had chosen.

We put it on the Intranet and got the head of development to send out a nice convincing email. Let's just say we had a few bites, which totally made our day

My firm sent out an all users email saying

"For many years now, we have provided as many free drinks per day from the machine as you want. This has, obviously, been costing us money, yadda yadda yadda, so from now on, the drinks machines will operate on the same system as our printers: you will activate them with your ID card. You will be limited to 6 drinks without sugar, and 4 drinks with sugar a day. Click here for more information".

However, morale is so low, and we're so used to the company making things even more miserable, yet pathetically trying to disguise it with concern for our wellbeing (see: sugar/ no sugar above), that about 90% of the firm just quietly muttered "Oh, FFS", and got on with their job, not bothering to click the link. It just didn't surprise us, or strike us as something that they would not do.

Hence, we had to have another email 3 hours later saying "That was a joke, by the way. None of you clicked the link".
