Re: I hate having wisdom teeth

I had a wisdom tooth out about a month or so ago...

definately a weird feeling and I didn't know it was coming out until they did it... thye just said they were going to "deal with it" which I thought was a filling, but no, out it popped...

a little weird for the first few weeks, seems good now though, just frustrating that food gets in the recess it left...

hopefully the recess wil become so unpronounced that food doesnt stand a chance in there... Fingers crossed!

Re: I hate having wisdom teeth

Well, just a quick update. Back at home and everything seems OK actually. A load of scabs formed on my mouth overnight, but it's all pretty much fallen off now; just still feels like coldsores at the moment. Jaw's a little stiff, so haven't been able to open wide and look in a mirror. Not in any pain, just a slight discomfort, but I'm on a soft diet, so haven't had anything too adventurous yet (only yoghurts so far!). Never got a debrief on what exactly they did, but can feel stitches in my mouth,, so I guess they sliced the side of my jaw to get them out (they weren't out very much at all). The antiseptic mouthwash is bloody awful though!

alternative high street mouthwash (but i suggest you swallow after)

jack Daniels, Havana club rum, Brandy, Vodka.

if you are unemployed you could try tramp juice (special brew) or sherry but its not as good

Reckon using some salted water as mouthwash after every meal would sort out the food getting stuck in the recess?

Re: I hate having wisdom teeth

I feel ya pain. Had two wisdom teeth out (same side) eleven years ago, went in to see what was wrong and came out minus them. Most painful part of the whole thing was the dentist injecting the local (I'd later find out way).

Anyway my local dentist is pretty much universally known as the butcher and after what he did to me I'd happily agree. After the teeth where removed the flesh around the entire area became so swollen it looked as if someone had forced a cricket ball into my left cheek (the swelling was ever so slightly bigger). As it stands I've now got nerve damage and every so often something sets it off (quite often a change in the weather) and I get shooting pains up and down the left of my jaw (after having a third out I've only one left, impacted).

My bottom wisdom teeth are impacted too, the right one worse than the left.
I sometimes get problems with inflammation around that tooth. What I do is
get a good glob of salt on my toothbrush and brush it like hell a couple of times a day.
It works better than any gloop from a tube or bottle.

Re: I hate having wisdom teeth

Just thought i'd give some general advice about wisdom teeth and things:

1, Keep everything nice and clean. If you have a flap of gum over the teeth, brush under it, and try and not get food stuck in there. Purchase a single tufted brush to help with access to clean and floss often.

2, If the area around the wisdom teeth is swollen - Ibuprofen and Paracetamol are your friends. They reduce inflammation and pain. Also, use hot salty mouth washes first and last thing at night, and after every meal. (Teaspoon of salt in half a mug of hot water)

3, Visit your dentist asap if you are getting pain or are worried. Most general dentists don't like to take lower wisdom teeth out as they can be tricky. You will normally be referred to the local hospital which will have a long waiting, and you will have to keep taking antibiotics to control the infection.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

Surgeons working under local can be as rough as they are capable of. Let me explain.

I had my left lower one out at King's College Hospital in Camberwell- they're a teaching hospital. I went for a consultation with a rather sexily confident 40-ish female consultant who had a quick look, and said, 'yeah sure, we can do it, how about tomorrow'? Slightly stunned, I said O.K. (I was unemployed at the time, so obviously free the next day, good timing in fact as it cost me nowt). Then she said 'we are a teaching hospital obviously, do you have any objection to a student performing the procedure?'

Well students have to learn somehow, and I figured they might as well butcher a macho idiot like me, so of course I agreed.

So I went in, got the 'orrible big needle in the back of the gum, then a young, attrative female student and a 30-ish, attractive teacher had a look. "Well, you'll have to cut the gum away from one of the teeth in front with a scalpel and peel it back", the teacher said. "Do you think it'd be better to cut it one tooth or two teeth in front?"

At this point I wanted to say "well if it's all the same to you, I'll have minimal gum peeling please" but I think I had a brace in my mouth or something, or possibly I couldn't feel my face at that point.

They elected for two teeth in front unfortunately.

After the unpleasant sensation of having quite a bit of gum peeled away from my teeth- I could feel it fine, it just didn't hurt- they got busy trying to pull the tooth out. I could see the student really giving it all her strength with no joy. I had to use my neck muscles to brace my head a bit, and I found my entire body tensing up in sympathy- honestly, the veins in my arms were popping. I had to really try and relax. Anyway, after that failure they got a drill out and took a bit of my jaw out. In the end I seem to recall that it took the combined efforts of the student and teacher to haul the bastard out- I was so numb that I didn't feel it release but it hit my incisors on the way out- I had to open my mouth a bit wider for them to get it out, that's how long the roots were. I think they were cutting and drilling me up for at least 20 minutes in total.

The gum took at least a month to reattach to my remaining molars. I think I was a bit lax with the salt rinse, all the stitches just fell out by themselves by working their way through infected gum.

Any questions, feel free to ask.
Cheers. I'll ask about another odd episode with my mouth. A few months before I had my wisdom tooth out I was sitting at work and felt something hard on the inside of my lower jaw just behind my left lower incisor. I thought it had worn through to a tooth root or something. After about a week it got really annoying, because I just couldn't stop investigating this strange intrusion with my tongue. So I registered with a dentist, who did a mouth x-ray as a matter of course for a new registration, and then said quite casually 'oh, I see you have an extra tooth'.

'Yeah, that's why I'm here', I said. So he offered to take it out, and did a week or so later using little more than what looked like a screwdriver. It was only a pretty tiny tooth with a minimal root. He commented that it wasn't that unusual and that I probably had an ancestor with an extra tooth, but my mum denied all knowledge and said I must be a freak . Is that actually common? I think I kept the little tooth as a keepsake but it's long been lost as a result of various house moves / wife with maniacal cleaning tendencies etc.

Re: I hate having wisdom teeth

My ones came through just after I had all 4 second-to-the-back teeth removed as they were only baby and had no adult teeth under. The wisdom have moved in perfectly and now it's pretty much like I have a full set again.

For those worried about having teeth removed, it's really not bad at all. It's an uncomfortable feeling when they're yanking it about but really I felt more pain from the injections to the gums!

Re: I hate having wisdom teeth

Just another quick update. Had to go to the dentist today as my left side was quite painful (ironically, the "optional" side) and just wanted to make sure if it was an infection. The dentist said there was a little bit of one, but nothing too serious. So he removed the stitches (they were dissolvable, but he said they had done their job and were more likely to cause an infection at this stage), cleaned the area and then added some sort of "wasabi" paste; bit of an odd taste to it, but should help the healing process.

Also got a better debrief and found out that the diclofenic sodium I was taking was actually the equivalent to the ibuprofen that I had been taking with the paracetamol, so had been sligthly overdosing on it. Found out as well I shouldn't use the mouthwash at the same time I clean my teeth, but to leave an hour between each. Also been able to upgrade my diet from "liquid" to "mush"!

^ Jolly good moving up the Mohs scale, you will be at peanut brittle in no time.

On the subject of wisdom teeth, my dentist told me years ago I'd be in trouble if mine moved (lower ones) and like you would be 'up the hospital'.
As they never have, he just gave me something to worry about for no reason - there are many other perfectly good things I could have worried about in that slot.

Re: I hate having wisdom teeth

Erm we see extra teeth all the time, they are called supernumaries.
However they are mostly in the top jaw inbetween the front upper central incisors.
Never seen an extra teeth near the lower incisors, but then again, i don't have that much experience...
