In 5 years time, just remember who it was who suggested you diversify from the IT field. I have this awful feeling it's reaching saturation.

I think it's maturing more than anything. The crap IT people from the dot-com boom are being weeded out. Always a place for good people in every profession.

I can't see it dieing employment wise, more likely just new branches coming out of it as new tech appears (though what do I know )

What about doing some course with recognised awards at the end, eg microsoft certifications (MSDN etc.), Novell, cisco certified etc. ?

You could teach yourself from books some of these (maybe...) that are available then just do the exam(s) to get the certification(s).

Yeah, that's basically what I'm planning on doing but with the OU. I don't really want a degree in it (yet anyway), is really just the base level to get into and dabble to see if I like it at all. Depends on how much they cost really.

Re: Something to do, Suggestions for things to learn

Right, have been thinking and might have it narrowed down a bit. (Haven't started anything yet due to holiday/other bits getting in the way).

I'm planning on going the project route, as I think that'll give me both motivation and a more specific way of learning things rather than just sitting and reading e-books.

I'm yet to think of the project, but the direction I'm going in is some form of database and web applications. (The database being for any future projects I do like setting up a home datasever etc). I need some help in narrowing what to start with/learn.

I'd quite like to get into knowing forum databases (vbulletin/phpBB) reasonably well as I've used them before but never really been much use with them, I assume they're fairly similar to learn?

But beyond that, which is the best database language to start off with/focus on. I'd rather focus on one and know it reasonably so that I can then transfer to another language if I need to but know the basics of progrmaming.

Would a project of setting up an offline webpage, database and forum be a good aim? Please bare in mind that I've not touched programming before, and may be a bit slow to start off with so any suggestions of a simple starting point would be good

Right, it seems I've been seeing things incorrectly and getting muddled up, but this is now my current plan.

Learning basic principles of coding in general, a starting point: Pascal

Optionals for general use (such as if I set up my own website): CSS/SQL - Perhaps vBulletin/phpBB

Have micro-projects as I go along to confirm my knowledge, still something to aim for rather than just repetition (such as games, useless programs etc)

Aim to build knowledge towards a larger project (such as a website/database/forum) with all the previously acquired knowledge.

    Thoughts?

probs the wrong place to post this but learn a language - opens up a whole nother world of girls, especially girls of that language who are over here (you have just finished alevels, we all know thats what you really care about)

on a side note its a great thing to have for employment, uni (year study abroad) and traveling - theres many many options - more than just working a computer

Yeah, French and German are currently on the list of ones to get into as I'm planning on travelling a bit. I'm not geeking out completely, don't worry
