    MSN Abuse

Hello people, A very good friend of mine who is a girl who I've been getting very close to recently has come under some insane about of abuse from my Ex-Gf and her pals (it can only be them, ive read what they have said) but I need more proof that it is then because I will taking this further, the things that have been said have been absolutely disgusting.

I spent a lot of time last night trying to find out how to get a IP address out of them on MSN which in the end I managed to do, Now if I remember correctly that IP address is allocated to that one machine provided by their ISP - now what can I do to trying and track down who they are using their IP address (obviously in a legal way) and if that means going to the police then fine but I just want advice on how to go about it.

    Thank you

    Re: MSN Abuse

Turn on MSN logging, present logs, IP and any other evidence to the local bobbies. IIRC, it requires a court order to get the identity behind an IP legally.

Simpler short term solution would seem to be to block the offenders and then not accept any friend requests for a while.

She did that, and like I said they have gone to the nutty extremems and got her number - so when she blocked them they started sending her non stop emails and then started ringing her! I've come here first due to the way I'd normally handle something like this would be considered 'not the right way to go about it' but advice on here is never let down.

If it's not just an internet thing, and it's a concentrated campaign, then ring the police on the non emergency number this morning and make an harassment complaint. They will probably recommend trying to avoid them, explain you already have and it's not letting up. If there have been any threats, make sure you have examples of them.

I thoroughly understand the desire to do things 'not the right way', when someone you care about is being attacked like this. Over the years I have come to understand however the moral high ground is a great fighting position

    Re: MSN Abuse

I've had something like this happen to me many years ago. It was back when I was in college and one of the lads took exception to me for no apparant reason, thinking about it this was when ICQ was still the king of IM and MSN was still just a little upstart.

He'd keep on flooding my e-mail address with either useless spam and the same with my ICQ.

He amped up the attacks when he got other people that I knew to do the same.

I can't remember how it stopped exactly as it was so long ago now, but I know it's not a nice thing to have to live through.

Get the police involved which others have suggested, and then I would personally change msn account, change mobile numbers and not give them out to anyone she doesn't know or trust.

BAD IDEA! Get the police involved asap before this turns any more nasty. Fight fire with a bucket of water labelled 'police' rather than fire which will most likely end up with you getting reported to the police.

    Re: MSN Abuse

Thats still the soft option to be honest mate. At the end of the day say a few months down the line once the mother can trust the girl again the ban off the phone will be lifted, she'll be free to go and see her friends again and it all kicks off, but worse.

A short, sharp shock from the police on the other hand will make her think twice before doing something like this again.

If you have an avenue for resolving this civilily, then great, go for it. Make sure you log everything that's been done accurately to resolve this as you also have an option to persue a civil court case to obtain a restraining order against your ex g/f to prevent her from contacting you or your current gf and it definately helps to show you've tried to resolve this

    Re: MSN Abuse

I think I possible misread your post thinking you were going to confront the Ex directly(!). If you are having a civilised chat with the Ex's mum make sure the Ex isn't there as it could kick off nastily. Perhaps meet in a cafe and discuss it over a cuppa?

I guess people here are just trying to err on the side of caution, things can easily escalate and get out of hand quickly when people are backed into a corner. We don't want the Ex to turn nasty on you when directly confronted, or you to be forced to do something unfortunate when round their house without an easy way out.

Take care and I hope it gets resolved in a civilised way.

If it's gone that far then speak with the police, the ex probably doesn't realise what she is doing is a crime and probably wouldn't be willing to continue if she knows she could get in "real" trouble rather than a few pissed off old boyfriends.

I don't understand why people do this kind of thing at all, have a bit of dignity and walk away from ex's... there is just no need to get involved in slanging matches!
