GD used to be a bit clliquy, which I think used to discourage newcomers from staying in GD. And it wasn't uncommon for serious threads to get trashed quite early on, which was discouraging for both newcomers and more established members alike.

The banter thread was closed simply because it was getting out of hand - the old adage that it only takes one or two people to take things too far and it ruins it for everyone else.

Th thread trashing doesn't happen as often now as it used to, and although threads do go off topic, they are usually brought back, unless the subject has been exhausted or flogged to death when it just runs on.

There are some serious threads, usually in QT, and if they aren't in QT to start with, they are moved there, so that GD remains a place for the less serious ones.

Our aim as mods and admins is to keep HEXUS an open and inclusive forum, where someone, whatever there post count but especially a new member, can post without fear of having a thread trashed or being personally attacked or sneered at.

By and large we expect the forums to be self moderating, so that new members see what sort of posts are acceptable by the example of more established members.

Santa Claus put it quite well in an earlier post in that he regarded GD as a bit like his local, where opinions could be voiced, and newcomers were welcome.

The main difference is that in face to face conversation there are the non-verbal communication clues that you don't get in a forum - it is very much one dimensional. If we were having a conversation and I disagreed and invited you to "go forth and multiply" in a light hearted way with a smile on my face as I was buying you a pint, you'd probably take it good spirit.

On the other hand, If I thrust my face forwards, and started jabbing my finger at your chest, you'd (rightly) take that as a threat, and I'd be inviting you to punch my lights out!

We also have to be careful of the legal implications of posts (as the current Twitter stories demonstrate) and so we err on the side of caution. We also aim to keep HEXUS as safe family viewing so that is an additional constraint.

And I certainly wouldn't want to see HEXUS degenerate into an unmoderated anything goes forum (there are enough of those anyway) and I don't think the majority of the membership would like that either.

the trouble is members are leaving and nobody new is coming, i think "degeneration" is already happening and promising more of the same is probably a bad way to reverse it.

But the question really is what do YOU want to see?

the forum like it used to be, it used to get on fine without the "Question Time" subsection, and now it cant WITH it? fix GD, and while you are at it PLEASE change "Question Time" to something more relevant to its actual purpose, like "serious business" or "the intellectuals room", whatever, doesn't matter as long as it isn't called "question time" only when we have a stable sensible section (which seems to be purposefully vague right now, and has avoided a lot of requests for a name change, weird!) can we start to turn GD back into a people-magnet where people feel at ease to start a thread about whatever the hell they are thinking, like it used to be. Rather than login, see there is nobody there, leave.

I don't think there's a whole lot wrong with QT, at least it warns you that if you can't be bothered to come up with good arguments and back up your points you probably shouldn't bother posting in that particular thread. Unlike GD where you'd hope you could get away with less of a nitpicking atmosphere.

I don't know why GD is so dead though. I mean, if we were to post some drivel in there (well-meant drivel obviously, not just spam), would it get locked? If not, what is there to change, other than attitudes?

the last big mod recruitment seemed to eat a good half dozen regular, quality posters and turn them in to peripheral figures, who appear now and again to tell you you have crossed the line.

Then again that could have been a coincidence... perhaps they all got busy at the same time

Yeah, making big posters mods always restricts them, you cant really be seen to police your own topics and debates.

The other possibility is the loss of upgrade junkies to the current consoles, I don't think I really posted much for about 6 months after I bought a PS3.

Going to be honest, as one of the newer members it did take a while to settle in, there were a lot of people, some of them in this thread, who were quite aggressive as I recall
Things haven't really changed much, but that seems to be the general mood of the forums tbh, Quite like it

come on, be serious. that is just Saracen skewing it - less people that arent Saracen posting = longer threads on average.

I've been kicking around here for a few years now and its good to see how its grown

its not always been hunky dory and a few people have infuriated me over the years but on the whole its a good place to reside.

I'm no huge poster but I always keep an eye as to whats going on, would feel weird not having hexus to check here and there lol.
