Chinese gamer dies after three day blowout

A Chinese man has died after playing an online game for three days without a break.

The Beijing Times reports that the unnamed 30 year-old had barely slept or eaten during his mammoth session. He collapsed while playing at an internet cafe on the outskirts of the city and was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he died after failing to regain consciousness.

and "It later came to light that the man had spent the equivalent of £928 on online games last month" £928 in a month on games wow, these chinese do have a lot of money.
i used to do 2 days with out sleep over the week ends.

wow, a grand a month! No wonder the majority are so poor as they all tend to be gamers .

And really, at 30 years old does it not become second nature to just avoid more than 1 all nighter! Especially playing at an internet cafe, they should have just kicked him out after 1 or 2 nights surely.

Sorry what? What does the fact that he was Chinese have to do with him spending money? It could have been on credit cards or overdrafts. Just because one person spends an excessive amount on something doesn't mean the whole nation has money coming out of their ears now does it?

My mate who lived in China for half a year last year said that would be around year's worth of wages there for average person and that's in Shanghai

It does say equivalent, this probably takes into account cost of living, wages etc, not just exchange rate. ie : the guy spent a months wages on games

No official report of death, but heart failure was most likely. He'd be running on caffeine, sugar, and adrenaline for the whole 3 days, and it's unlikely that it was the first time he pulled multi-day stints.

If they were doing that, I very much doubt they'd come to a figure like 928; it would be rounded a bit. I'm sure this is just the exchange rate conversion. Not all wages in China are terrible you know; a close friend of mine gets 800 Euro a month as a PhD student from them; along with extras for living expenses etc.

Sounds like the kind of thing that can happen to you with drug/alcohol addiction... it was his last 'bender' so to speak.

Did anyone see that (dispatches?) documentary a few months back? It did highlight that game addiction in some asian countries (esp korea?) is a serious problem. I dare say those countries could be advising europe and america in the future... It focused mainly on the kinds of RPG games that have cycles of reward so they act in a similar fashion to drugs I suppose. Interesting topic, I'm sure someone here knows more about it than I.
