    Re: Dealing with Jehovah Witness's

The ones that come around here are very reasonable, I tell them that I'm not interested and they thank me for my time and leave.

There were a group that came around where my parents live and they were very hard to get rid of, I got fed up and went to close the front door when one of them put his foot in the door so that I couldn't close it. The dog took exception to that and made it clear that either he removed his foot from the door or she'd remove his foot from his leg. Good girl.

    Re: Dealing with Jehovah Witness's

I'm 31 and I've never once answered the door to a Jehovah's Witness.

When I was about 13/14 I woke up at my usual time (for when I wasn't being forced to play school rugby ) of about 11am on a Saturday. My mum said "you should have got up a bit earlier today Richard, three really nice looking girls knocked on the door. I think they were Jehova's Witnesses, but you could have chatted them up".

My mum is as much of an atheist as me. But she honestly said that!?!?

I normally put in a decent effort at converting them to Satanism. Normally I can get them to agree with all the doctrine until I actually mention it's satanism, when they start to get annoyed..

    Re: Dealing with Jehovah Witness's

I want to ask for their home address, then when they won't give me it say "But why? Don't you want random people coming round and bothering you in your spare time?.... Oh wait.... That sounds very familiar..."

    Religion is like a penis.
    It's fine to have one.
It's fine to be proud of it.
But please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around,
And PLEASE don't try to shove it down my throat.

I have never had to deal with them myself, to get up to our flat they would have to buzz in at the front door anyway

    Re: Dealing with Jehovah Witness's

I get them every now and then, but they only get as far as the intercom. It usually goes something like...

"Hello, I'm xxx from yyy. Do you believe in god?"

Me: "No I do not, goodbye now."

Sometimes they get as far as "why not?" to which I reply with something like "because there is no compelling evidence".

Never had any aggressive types though and it's not very often. Maybe some day a door-to-door atheist will come along... I wonder how that will go down?

    More rationally perhaps?

It certainly would be interesting to see some guy in a lab coat going from door to door clutching a copy of PhilosophiƦ Naturalis Principia Mathematica.

    Indeed,

    'Do you believe in god'
    'yes'
'let me explain why the entire belief system is so flawed'

I imagine he would probably be arrested for hate crimes though

Well, in my case, last time they visited, I just lost it, completely and utterly.

Let me say this. I have no problem with anything anyone chooses to believe, religion-wise, provided it neither adversely affects me, nor do they try to shove it down my throat. That includes Jehovah's Witnesses, right up to the point where they keep pestering me at home, despite having been asked, repeatedly, not to do so.

I have asked, again and again, for them put me on a list, time and again, to prevent calls. They say they will, then a few weeks/months later, they're back again. So much for the list.

So .... last time. I had pulled an 20 hour day, including right through the night, and got home exhausted. Also, I had a stinking headache, largely due to a 5 hour drive home after a long job. So I had a quick bath and went to bed. I'd been asleep about an hour, long enough to be deeply asleep when .... doorbell.

    Yup, it was some Witesses.

Well, I lost the plot. I asked, in what I'm sure was a raised voice and probably and octave above normal, something like ....

"When the <bleep> are you <bleeping> people going to leave me the <bleep> alone. I've <bleeping> asked you not to call here so many <bleeping> times I've <bleeping> lost count, and I'm sick and <bleeping> tired of being pestered by you <bleeps>. Neither my <bleeping> religion nor my salvation are any of your <bleeping> business, so why don't you <bleep> off and leave me the <bleep> alone like you keep <bleeping> promising to do. For <bleep's sake>, if going to Hell is the price I have to pay to be given a bit of <bleeping> peace and quiet by you <bleeping> idiot's, show me where to sign up and I'll <bleeping> sign. Now kindly <bleep> off before I lose my <bleeping> temper."

I know (because I took the trouble to measure it) that my BP rocketed after that incident, and I rather suspect I went distinctly red in the face. I was furious with them.

If they want to try to convert other people, fine. Put a placard up in the street in shopping centre, and try to convince anyone that stops and asks. Have leaflets delivered by the PO like double-glazing companies and local pizza shops. Do a conventional mailshot. Or at least respect the <bleeping> notice by people's door and don't call when asked not to.

I get the occasional cold caller ignoring signs, and they get a polite if terse not interested, and I close the door. But I'm afraid JW's knocking on my door are beyond the pale, and they (up 'til now, but the clock is still ticking) have ignored repeated polite, and even blunt, requests to not call.

It's not that I have anything against JWs. A cousin of mine (by marriage) is one, and she's a lovely lady .... who has never attempted in any way to preach or convert me. What I have is a problem with JWs that, at least until now, won't refrain from knocking on my door despite repeat requests and their frequent promises.

I shudder to think of my reaction if I get yet another visit, but if you hear on the evening news of some bloke arrested for chasing a couple of JWs down the street with a meat cleaver .....

    Re: Dealing with Jehovah Witness's

if i had to describe myself in one sentence, it certainly wouldn't be

I am Lee, and i am a Liverpool fan

    it certainly wouldn't be

I am Lee, and i am a Roman Catholic

    it may be

I am Lee, and i am a "think of the best job title you could give to a sysadmin"

so does us giving jobs the headline over religion make us any better than they are? it is at least something tangible i suppose, so maybe it does.

religion: on the same level as people who identify themselves initially by a team sport they follow.

Pretty lucid considering you were just out of bed.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.
