so what jobs are good at the mo?

unemployed since my xmas temp job in retail, been looking on and off but it seems all i see are telesales and charity related stuff.

whats thriving at the mo? easy to get into or require little to no experience?

have IT qualifications college level BTEC, GCSEs e.t.c

SAme thing happening with me mate, I have GCSE's, A-Levels and a 2.1 Degree but all I am able to get at the minute is a 16 hour a week job in a petrol station.

Trying to get back into uni to do a teaching degree but due to educational cuts etc its proving near impossible.

May have to try something new next year and get qualifications which actually lead to a job.

check out android, that seems to be picking up but not really a long term thingy as it wont be as big as backend development.

what programming languages u know?

A mate of mine has a first in biology from a good uni, and can't get anything beyond the 8 hour a week job he's been doing all the way through uni :/

Get a job as an house Energy Performance Certificate assessor - I've just been charged £72 for a man to do a cursory glance about the house, take a few photos and be gone in under 10 minutes. Easy money!

Slightly more seriously, I got my foot in the door at a company through temping to start with, proving my worth and then getting offered a permanent job for more money. I'm not sure how good the temp market is at the moment though.

I rang up the temping agency near me today and she said they had nothing at the minute. That the market is extremely slow and it could be mid May before anything comes up. I left my number should the situation change.

I think N.Ireland is in worse shape than the rest of the UK.

Thats true, but truth is in terms of everyday life and work, were not much better off. Id be amazed if we still werent in recession

Our recovery does seem to be much more slower than the rest of the UK though. Unfortunately I have no figures to back this up.

I'd say its worth having a think about what your good at, and better than average at, make a list of those key leanings/interests and skills then work from there.

Then I'm guessing geographic location is the next factor, so start looking on job sites with very general search terms based on you key skills or interests.

Once you've got a few job profiles that look OK, start trying to think how you could shape yourself to suite them. What you would have that makes you better than the others who would be applying.

Also you mustn't ever think just because you've got a second class degree or a GCSE or two that it means your entitled to a job, or that you would be better suited than a candidate who has no formal education but has shown aptitude or relevant experience. Asking for advice on a forum may well be a good start, but it will represent at most 1% of the effort you'll have to extend to get a good job.

I say this every time, but....bus driving. My company has consistently decreased the money on offer to new starters since I joined, but we're still recruiting AFAIK. This is in London, obviously I don't know about other areas of the UK, but worth looking into. Wherever you are in the UK you're probably looking at a couple of quid an hour over the minimum wage, and possibly unsocial hours payments and overtime. You may well have to work shifts mind. And you may well have to sign up for a year if they're paying your training (with an exit penalty if you decide to leave).

But unless you have to drive through nasty areas of town it's a nice job. I quite enjoyed it even with the level of grief I got in South London.

some of it is down to luck as well. i was lucky to get a IT programming job after around 8+months of looking. after you get your first IT job, the rest is plane sailing. all about experience now.

There are environmental/biological jobs out there (I'm interviewing for one today for example), but the competition is getting hotter for each post (60 applicants for the job I'm offering, of which about 40 could probably do the job to a lesser or greater extent). As always, the biggest issue is getting experience to start with.

If you can, get on a graduate recruitment programme - they can be a fast-track to success.

Tons of jobs in biology in the UK, despite the cut backs it's still very well funded both privately and publicly. Slightly depends which branch of biology you go into, but there's still good demand for biochemists, biophysicists, bioinformaticians etc.
