    Anyone else think this is totally pointless?

    It seems to assume that you need to dial up to certain numbers to access chat rooms. And as for blocking broadband signals, I really can't see what that would achieve, apart from you not being able to use the internet.

    Or you could just unplug it.

    Can someone please explain the point of it?

    Ummm... ahhh.... errr... nope, sorry - got me.

    I got the impression they thought they were dealing with an idiot ... So I showed what it could do, and they all started clapping.
    Bet it was a golf clap though

    That really is most baffling... so do you just put the device in when you are not going to be in the house or what?

    I don't have a clue m8. It would seem it was designed to stop people going into chatrooms, but I don't know of any online chatrooms which involve dialling a different number to your ISP (OK, fair enough old BBS systems were dial-in but I doubt kids use those).

    So it would appear it exists to block your phone line, in which case unplugging the cable would have the same effect. Or just unplugging the box and bypassing it.

    Anyone who can explain this thing wins a cookie.

    Does seem weird. especially considering there are thousands of dialup numbers that you would have to block.

    I'm assuming there would be either a key or a code that only the parent would have to "unlock" the device, other than that it's basically prevent the child from using dial-up or broadband without the parent's concent.

    But ultimately the entire thing is pointless as the parent would still have to look over the child's shoulder and watch everything they do, highly doubtful if they're tech-savvy enough to configure and use a fire-wall (net-nanny et al is fairly useless) to let the child surf un-attended..

    My point is that its portrayed as a device to stop people going into chatrooms, when to do that it would need to totally block the line, and is therefore no different to just unplugging the modem.

    Well it's probably just the way the article is written, "chatrooms" are the big evil thing on the internet these days.. so by blocking the internet entirely you're blocking the chat-rooms..

    How much money could you make by running a proxy service which blocks access to those kinda things . . .

    Like N2H2 but targeted at home users, then sell it to all the "omg teh internet is evil, won't somebody think of the children?" brigade.

    Another way for parents to offload responsibility IMO.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    I don't get it. Surely the only number you actually dial if you're on dial-up is the number of the ISP? And if you block that, then what's the point of having the internet?

    What were the previous winners of this competition? Underwater hairdryer? Inflatable dartboard?

    Why buy a box to block your ISP, im pretty sure all ISP require a password anyway, why not just untick the "save password" box
