Knox...I must be one of the only people who doesnt mind or care if people smoke around me.

I dont like the smell AFTERWARDS on me....but at the time....I'm cool about it.

AND given a choice of a pub with or without smokers...I'm up for the smoking one everytime.

I cant even IMAGINE life without ciggies.....

    AND I DONT SMOKE.

But I did try...for an experiment, once...long ago...

    I smoked for 3 months.....

bah i really dont get smokers, ok so its hard to stop, fair doos. But why start in the first place? Its much much faster and cheaper to just buy a knive and slit your wrists.... plus that way you dont kill a few hundred other people at the same time...

Wish more people in my local had the same opinion, they seem to think that with the little sign that divides it up that says "no smoking in this area of the bar" comes an invisible barrier. Pubs just wouldn't be the same without a haze of smoke under the pool table lights imo and Just out of interest zak why did you try smoking?

Being around people who smoke doesn't really bother me, as long as they don't blow it in my face.

I smoked once, choked, and never have since, though.

cos it interested me....still does tbh.

Deckard smoked, as did another good friend....and I figured it MUST be nice....why doit otherwise.

I have driven very fast in my life. I have drunk way too much on the odd occassion...I haven't done drugs.....they scare me because I have an addictive nature....if I enjoy something I like to do it again...and thats why I will never try anything hard.

But cigarettes....I figured they were worth a try. My parents did a FANTASTIC job of putting me off as a child...really exceptional. My Mum never ever stopped going on and on about how evil smoking was.

When, at 14 years old, my best friend in the world (not Deckard back then) started smoking, I nearly died of shock. By the time he was 15 his parents knew and simply told him to decide himself....they smoked....I lived at their house a lot...we were best friends. I was offended that he'd done such a stupid thing....and ignored my advice. IMy feelings were hurt.

But by the time I was 18 or 19 it interested me....it MUST be worth trying. You CAN give up...if you dont like it at all you just stop....a few more years passed...I never did anything about it.

    Then I decided to try.
I smoked for 3 months almost to the day....I went on Deckards Stag night with a packet of fags in my pocket, smoked most of them too....

then after 3 months....experiment done. Stopped.

Some times it DOES help your nerves...it DEFINATELY makes your head spin...its very fast acting, tobacco makes you think differently, and there is NO WAY I woud drive and smoke cos it made me very very dizzy.

Some wine tasted horrible with a fag....but SCOTCH was superb.....I wish I'd tried cigars or a pipe too...

On the wohle though...I felt like death the morning after smoking a lot....not coughing...just....felt heavy like gravity was stronger.

Once I'd stopped I HATED the smell of ciggs for about a year...made me feel very ill....

    and now....ack to normal

    ish...

but not smoked since and prob never will

I used to have a few 'tabs' when I was very drunk; nothing more and have stopped now - was no point smoking.

I would never buy my own either - always pinch one. I would have had to have a few drinks though as I could never stomach them without.

Knox I imagine that women was trying to dissuade you from lighting up rather than frightened of your cig packet .
I have to say that anyone who does light up in the presence of none smokers without first asking needs to learn a bit of basic respect. I mean smokers are welcome to kill themselves and their children if they want (although I'd be grateful if they did so a bit quicker rather than hanging around coughing and choking for the last half of their life ) but poisoning and slowly killing innocent bystanders is a different matter entirely.

At least in Ireland now there is no smoking in any place of work (which is nearly everywhere ). The only disadvantage is that most of the big pubs, instead of smelling of smoke, smell of piss . But still it makes socialising a cleaner occupation

I wasn't gonna light up, its a no smoking resteurant and im surrounded by none smokers eating, besides was eating a pizza myself so I was hardly gonna light up there.

Zak, dizzyness was never something that affected me, it affected one of my mates for a while i assume its the same as the effects of smoke inhalation
Interesting experiment though really, I can't really remember exactly when or why i started exactly, I remember a bit of depressing streak sending me from 10 to 20 a day though.

you get the dizzy spell as a nicotine rush

so really only when you start smoking, as your not used to it, thats what makes people want to do it more, but as u smoke more and more u get used to it , so the headaches and dizzyness affect you less

Wrong. Smokers actually pay about 10 times more money in tax than they cost the NHS, last I heard. If everyone stopped smoking your tax bill as a non-smoker would go up.

I started smoking when I got drunk when I was about 17 or 18, but that didn't progress into full on smoking until I was about 23. I was a proper smoker for most of last year, although I never really smoked more than 10 a day except when I went to the pub. I knew it was bad for me but that wasn't really what made me quit; I started to find that I'd feel depressed after I'd smoked a fag, and it used to make me feel a bit ill to smoke during the day, even though I was craving the damned things. In the end I got so annoyed at my lack of willpower that I quit cold turkey one day in January and haven't smoked since, although I nearly lapsed on several occasions. I feel a lot better now, although I still miss them when I'm in the pub, and I've found that I've been drinking more recently, although I don't know if that's anything to do with not smoking.

Ever smoked? No. I've never brought a packet of ciggies. Tried it? I've tried to smoke, yes; but apart from the novelty of smoking a single fag when I was 10, in the park, to see what it was like, I'd never actually start smoking.

I drink in moderation and I like women. Seems to be enough for me to be going on, socially, without lighting up.

My Dad smokes, but he drummed it into me when I was young - only mugs smoke. A simple message, but it stopped me spending my money on fags and remove any interest in smoking.

My Mom also smokes, and during the time she was pregnant with my sister and me, she stopped; then started again after we were born. Never understood that. As soon as she knew she was pregnant, she never so much as had a drag on a ciggie, for the whole 9 months, but started smoking again as soon as the pregnancy was over.

My Dad's never understood it either; mostly because his pissed off, because he says if he had the will power to stop for 9 months, he could stop for good.

Reminds me of Stargate: SG1 - Series 2, Episode 9 where Daniels wife, Sha're returns to Abydos by order of Apophis. She's pregnant with his baby and the Goa'uld within her hibernates in order to protect the babys welfare. However, the parasite reawakens the moment that the baby is born.

Good stuff, tbh. I feel seriously geeky for remembering all that, though
