I like CrapshoT's avatar of Michael Jackson dancing so much that I decided to bung it in as my desktop background on my PC at work as you can see below:
Sorry about the amateurish airbrushing, I don't want any of our proprietary apps to be visible. Anyway, that's all well and good. What's freaky is that while I was sitting staring at the screen yesterday morning wishing I hadn't drunk so much on Thursday, I found that if you stare through the screen and focus on a point behind it, MJ eventually comes back into focus and appears to be dancing actually in the screen, a weird 3d effect! Once you've got him in focus, you can actually look over to the left of the screen and he's dancing away what looks like about 10cm behind the icons!
I've since done the same thing at home and it works here too, although the effect isn't as good on the slightly curved 21" CRT at home compared to the 15" TFT at work- I guess the TFT is a bit sharper, and the flatness probably helps a bit too. You can actually see the effect if you stare at the picture I've just posted, but it looks much better if you set the avatar as your background (remember to set it to tile) and have him actually moving. Try it yourself- unless you're susceptible to seizures, in which case leave well alone!. You have to have your head quite close to the screen; once he's gone out of focus and then come back in a bit further back, move your head backwards and forwards an inch or so you help get him in sharp focus.
Interestingly, drawing the gifs uses about 20% of the CPU time on the P4 2.66 in my work machine- but it doesn't use any on the home machine. I guess a 9700 is better than Intel Extreme Graphics at drawing 2D......
