    The whole uni thing /me needs help

    Well, as you might have seen I got my main choice into the University into Portsmouth. The thing is though, i'm not a UK resident so I have no clue about what's going on when I get over there and the whole uni thing.

    When I get into my halls i'm going to need the internet (ADSL) so who do I go with and how do i sort it out?

    Also, does anyone live/go to uni at portsmouth that fancy like giving me some tips about the place?

    Any general tips for uni? I'm going to do computer science

    Cheers

    For internet I think you should have a network to your room if you are staying on campus. When my sister went to uni (not Portsmouth but anyway) she had to sign up for it at this office and you just pay how ever much a month then just plug yourself in. Don't know the specifics tho. Hope this helps.

    university halls vary tremendously in what kind of connection you get, depending on the university and the individual hall. some are all wired up directly to the campus network, others you get nothing or incredibly expensive phone lines.

    sounds like you'll get dial-up ready to go, i very much doubt you'll be able to get an further technologies installed there on top of that.

    if you have dialup-only you can pay to have a bt line installed in your room alongside the existing line. usually.

    Halls usually won't let you touch your room in any way - not even blu-tack on the walls. I very much doubt that they'll allow you to add a phone line or broadband.

    You're lucky to get free dial-up access, tbh. My old university (Surrey) signed an exclusive deal with ntl that meant i) the university wasn't allowed to install JANET in the rooms & ii) we could only use ntl's dial-up service, which cost 2p a minute.

    i agree about the unlikelyhood of them letting you install a phone line.

    indeed, those arrangements are nasty, my sister had a similar predicament at her uni, except they had some deal with someone i'd never heard of and was more like 3.5p a minute, you can soon rack up a small fortune on these plans, and it's still slow

    Cheers mate, it was a great feeling (i think my mum was more overwhelmed than me though )

    On the case of phone lines, according to the terms and conditions i have got a phone line in there and if i want broadband i have to sign up with whoever (i don't know how it worked yet)

    My plan is to hook up my linux routing box up to the line though so i don't know what's quite going on yet but what i do know is that i can't really live without the internet Well i could actually live fine without the internet (as long as i had lots of games )

    Capital of chavs? Please, tell me exactly where this is as i'm not intent on getting beaten due to unprovoked attacks just for the fun of it. Tell me where to avoid please as crime scares the absolute sh*** out of me in england. We have 0 crime compared to you lot.

    Also, i've got one of the top 40 flats at portsmouth, it's in a highrise on the top floor (studio flat ) this might include extras, i'm not sure.

    Apparently i get to go there 2nd of october but that's a UK date as opposed to an international date (it's a lot more confusing for us rock dwellers to get settled in)

    Any tips on england would be nice, ta.

    I'm glad when I go to Bristol (hopefully) in a year, that they have 10Mbit network points.

    Do what I do... e-mail the uni IT staff/helpdesk and ask lots of questions. If they're any good they'll give you all the info you need.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    As long as i've got internet access i'll be happy. I'll be using my own firewall anyway on a different machine to be extra safe.

    Yeah Uni firewalls are pretty restrictive, they'll definately stop kazaa etc, but don't worry about games, they'll be poeple on the uni network hosting enough games to get by, at Nottingham even 4 or 5 years ago we used to have at least two CS servers and a UT server running all the time. And far more peeps have computers these days.
    They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.
