Re: What do you do for a living?

I joined the RAF - here's the official spiel of the trade:

ICT Technicians are responsible for maintaining and repairing a wide range of complex systems, from long-range search radar to aircraft mission and ground support systems, airfield navigation aids to local area networks. Each of these plays a vital part in processing and communicating the information needed to support effective air operations on a global scale.

As an ICT Technician, you could find yourself working on an airfield, in an underground bunker, office or workshop. Latest generation aircraft are as reliant on information flow as they are on fuel – and it could be your job to set up, operate and maintain the mission and ground support systems that enable the Typhoon aircraft to complete its mission.

There is also potential for extensive overseas travel, helping to set up deployable communications and control systems, sensors and navigation aids for operations and exercises.

I am currently in a cyber security post which has been great. With your sort of degree also consider engineering officers. This method gives you as a graduate the experience you need which you can then use on civvy street once you've had your fill of military life whilst getting paid very well.

There's quite a few from all three services on Hexus.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I hate you

I'd rather do either of those than what I am now, and you had the choice between them!? Lucky bugger...

My degree was a Engineering degree (Computer system engineering... think electronic engineering and computer science), but I find myself programming ERP software for a living. Always thought I'd stay in electronics myself!

Re: What do you do for a living?

I am a Production/Prototype engineer at company that deals in high tech water purification. People come up with requirements and we create something that meets their needs. No where near as glamerous as my old job working on the manufacturing line of an Armoured vehicle but the pay is very good and they are a really friendly company from what I can tell!

Engineering - its a cracking career!

Re: What do you do for a living?

I have no degree, spent several years working with my grandfather, who has been an engineer all his life, fixing / maintaing things. It was good fun with a wide variety of stuff to work on, there was the ordinary stuff like lawnmowers, washing machines, cars etc, but we also looked after a private sewage treatment thingy, a standby generator and a little jcb type digger. (Oh, and refelted a small tiled roof that had had the felt layed from the top down.) However, I'm not really a fan of outdoors, (especially the wet type) so I got a job as a programmer doing ordinary line of business applications, keeps me indoors without too much exposure to natural light. 13 years on and I am still in the same job.

At the moment I'm an event steward for S.E.S Security covering festivals/large sporting events and such like and the door supervisor for a local Toys R Us superstore. Strangely I've had more action happen in the toy store this Christmas than I have all year on the festival circuit!

Hi, I am educating myself in Affiliate online marketing. It takes time but if you do it right it does make money. It is not my full time job but definitely something I like to do as a primary one day.

Re: What do you do for a living?

Hmmm since 2007 I've been trying to do a whole 6 month work, 6 month play thing by going backpacking soon as one of my IT contracts ends. Hasn't always gone to plan and I never manage to save any money so end up working on my travels so here is a summary of jobs...

    Current Occupations:
IT Tech Monkey - Mainly support roles (2nd/3rd)
Scuba Diver Instructor - PADI OWSI / MSDT

    Old Occupations:
tried, failed, hated, loved... when you need to eat you need to eat.
    English Teacher (in China)
    Banana Picker (Australia)
Kiwi Fruit factory worker (New Zealand)
    Bar Work (all over)
Annoying person handing out flyers in the street (Oz)
    Hostel Bitch (all over)
Lift Operator @ Ski Resort (Canada)

I'm currently working a 12 month!!!!!!!!! IT contract in Hertfordshire after getting back from Canada and I'll be looking for some part-time dive work for the weekends to keep my skills up and get some free diving in... even though I dread the cold water, last dive job was 6 months in Roatan, Honduras.
