I think its important you try to get what you can afford(or afford to pay back in a short time),than start your life mired in even more debt(which can end up destroying many relationships more than what a pretty ring can save).

So,one piece of advice is don't go over the £800 you have for the budget,if that is what you can spend.
This is true, but women being women, if she knows you can afford it and you don't spend it then you're buggered! Whilst I know that really I paid significantly more than I cuold have for a second hand one for my OH's the way I figure it the ~1.8k spread over a lifetime isn't really that much. And it still gives me a bit of a thrill 10 years later to see her looking at it sparkle when its sunny.

The wedding industry knows how to do its job well TBH especially when combined with De Beers,et al, do with the prices of shiny pieces of carbon. OTH,one of my old bosses(has a decent salary) and his partner, just went to the registry office to get married with no big fanfare, etc when they were young. I don't even think the ring was thousands of quid either, but they have been married for well over a decade, and have been together for at least 20 years. The wife is quite a practical down to earth lady, and both of them made sure they invested in a property when at university together for example - that is where their money went. A £800 budget means you can still get something shiny enough, its not like Cubic Zirconia and stainless steel money!!

    Re: What ring?

Friends of mine found ones they liked, but were massively out of budget, so comissioned a local jewellers to make their wedding rings very similar to what they wanted for a fraction of the price and to reduce the clarity of the stones because they saw no difference, saved about half the cost and got a much better service as they could see the quality/clarity of the stones, check the resin mockups etc as it happened

According to the my country locals. there are gems associate with each person personalities to balance there natural energy in life. So it would be very beautiful and helpful if you can wear a gem embedded right associate with your characteristics (This is one point of view.I really don't know the trueth behind these things )

So given most engaged/married women in the UK wear diamonds, what characteristics should they have to match?

Diamonds i do not know. But gems there is way of matching the correct gem type with person. i really don't know how they do it. But usually gems value is change according to the type .

    Re: What ring?

Thanks for the advice guys. Currently living in Stirling Scotland. I can't travel too far due to work atm.

I also can't tell her as that would defeat the surprise. and I know it's not the money that counts. She would be very happy regardless of the ring I gave her but I want to get her a nice one that looks great.

    Re: What ring?

In that case, can you get into Edinburgh?

There are some really awesome jewellers and some proper old fashioned high end "pawn brokers" there that are bound to do some great vintage/second hand rings. We were thinking of going there to look at engagement rings, but found one in an antiques centre in Aberdeen instead.

    Re: What ring?

Random story: I have a friend who brought an engagement ring with stones (not diamonds). The ring itself was worth a few hundred quid, but the stones basically nothing.

An 'accidental' leaving of the fake receipt showing it was worth thousands in the wardrobe seemed to please her when she found out.

I just don't get it. Then again, she's a very material person.

    Re: What ring?

    Congrats.

I bought a brand new diamond ring with golden gold ( not white gold lol ) from Joyalukkas for £600 3 months ago for my wedding. They have a branch in Upton Park.

Indian shops are the best if you want to buy jewellery. I also bought £7,500 worth of 22ct jewellery set for my wife during my wedding.
Non-Indian shops like Ernest Jones etc. charge too much and their inventory is below par.

I'll post a pic of my ring ( her ring now, innit ? ) tonight

    Re: What ring?

I'm currently renewing the insurance on my wife's ring, unfortunately since it's now valued over £10k the ring must:
    1) Be worn at all times, even in bed, or
    2) Locked in a safe, or
    3) In a safety deposit box

It is a .77ct diamond, E colour, VVS1 clarity from a company that gives you a small blue/green box beginning with "T" and yes I used my house deposit for it. I saved about £1000 per year for a lot of years so I'm not rich in any sense of the word, but it was what i wanted to give. Now in our second house with 3 year old
