In fairness it can be difficult when faced with posters who are so entrenched in their view point that they are unwilling to listen to any amount of reason and evidence to the contrary, to not sometimes wonder if they are stirring up the pot deliberately. I've had it in other threads. Either way I guess it is best to just walk away and leave them to it or in a way they've won (assuming they were trying to troll). It's not our job to educate and correct the ignorant, nor bring balance or sense to their thoughts. There will always be morons in this world*. Any visit to the local boozer or scroll down Yahoo news comments will show you that. We can but do our bit then retire gracefully from the debate.

That's not to say holding a different viewpoint is wrong, or moronic. It's the inability or unwillingness to consider things from another view and think about them from someone else's position that I find incomprehensible and frustrating. To make an informed decision one must surely look at it from different perspectives. Otherwise it's a bit like saying "this is my presumption and I will hear no different" (which thinking about it is probably one of the strap lines for the Daily Mail...)

(* for clairty I am not implying anyone on this thread is a moron - I don't think any of the posts I've seen were stooping to those depths)

Re: 1600 W maximum on vacuum cleaners from from Sept!

This quote comes to mind, I guess the English Literature part of my schooling wasn't a complete waste afterall:

“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”
― Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

Cursory thoughts about reasons a person thinks a certain way are not good enough to consider things from their viewpoint, at least I have found that to be inadequate. Hexus is a fountain of reasoned argument, it is rare to need to use such quotes.

I agree with DanceswithUnix though, previous posts directed at Top_gun will show you why. I have refrained from replying to him for a week or more now.

An orange soap box? So... today we have learned Zak uses either a) coal tar soap or b) something very girly from the body shop. Which is it Zak?

Well then you'd better buy in bulk and stockpile as when the EU finishes closing all those coal power stations don't think it won't move onto targetting coal-gas production! (of which that soap is a by-product)

Bugger....I have literally not thought of that

Is soap rated to power output or use?

I mean......is soap gonna be restricted to 1600 watts?

You know coal tar is banned in cosmetics (which includes soap) right? Coal tar soap just has the smell of coal tar these days.

Is it the same Dominic who used to work for Walt Disney? Now I do know Miele has an experience centre in Abingdon where around 25000 people have visited each year to get hands on experience on their products. Now it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume his skills are more relevant to the experience centre than shaping the future of Miele products. Also, I did not say Miele didn't use marketing people. What I said is that Miele wasn't run by accountants or marketing as it was the two-family co-owners who runs the business. I very much doubt Dominic has a huge say considering it's a German company with many outlets around the world.

Not one bit, it was over 100 years ago so I would happily buy one of their products but based on what they are like now not then.
The very first line of Carl Miele's wikipedia page said this "Carl Miele senior ( born July 25, 1869 in Herzebrock , † 24 December 1938 in Gütersloh ) was an engineer and industrialist". His father owned an industrial chimney construction business and so Carl done his apprenticeship in bricklaying as he was being groomed to take over or play some part in his father's business. Building these industrial chimneys must require some knowledge of engineering and brick laying.

Engineering isn't just restricted to electrical. There are tunnel engineers, bridge engineers, aeronautical engineers, etc. To suggest that Carl Miele was just a brickie gives a misleading picture to his background.

I fully agree that people should buy products that are around today and not 100 years ago unless you're an history buff. But purchasers do take into account ethos of companies and Miele has an ethos of quality for the past 100 years.

I am glad TG that you are pleased with your purchases. I am an engineer, with an engineering degree, member of an engineering institute, you almost certainly handle my products on a weekly basis, a lot of the money you spend will go merrily through lines of code that I wrote, and I am proud of the level of engineering that went into and the reliability of all the things I have ever helped be created over the years. But I am finding this part of the thread frustrating, life is too short for further explanations, and I am done here
I don't think I own any British made electrical products in my home as I consider them to be low in quality/aesthetics and unreliable. You know, the sort of stuff that expires shortly after the guarantee has ended.

Perhaps the reason you may find listening to great music as an odd reference is because you may not fully understood the connoisseur element but you may be more in tune with the commercial type music.

Sadly, I don't buy much music these days as the newer artists does nothing for me. Yes, I did attend lots of concerts years ago but sadly a lot of these great singers/musicians are no longer around. The last two concerts involved Jon Lucien at the Jazz Cafe and Terry Callier at the Union Chapel. Both are now dead.

I pride myself in the ability to think for myself rather than just taking a consensus from a bunch of people who may not have my best interest to hand.

The fact that you guys have used bully tactics to get your views across is really striking and quite puzzling over just a vacuum cleaner.

I'm afraid none of your arguments stand up to the real world. If my vacuum cleaner should ever breakdown tomorrow (it won't because it's a Miele!) I feel confident enough to buy a replacement which is more energy efficient and high performing. Who are you to say otherwise?

I shall accept your apology though I feel you were prompted rather than giving a more sincere one.

I shall accept your apology though I feel you were prompted rather than giving a more sincere one.
Bully boy tactics? Where? Grow up. Oh and unless I missed something I didn't offer you an apology, I have nothing to apologise to you for.

And with that I'm done with this thread. Laters

That is probably my fault ik9000... I did tell him he is arrogant twice in this thread. My bad.

Same as you, no apologies here...

Danceswithunix allowed his frustration to get the better of him (see earlier posts) and made comments for which he later apologised. The apology was (somewhat ungraciously, IMHO) accepted..

End of...(that particular bit of discussion )

A slight at British engineers such as myself, told I'm not a connoisseur of music and don't know there are different disciplines of engineering. In the scheme of things it was better than I was expecting tbh.
