My point is the rules are simple.

You apply for asylum in the country you enter.

If they wish to come here first, then fine.

As opel80uk said, this is similar to the Dublin regulations. I think the time limit on the previous country you entered expires after 12 months, and also Germany enforces a stricter rule, very much like you've described. Ah ha - the web is great ... Article 16a section (2) !

Of course any system of rules can be manipulated and if I were Greece, struggling with economic disaster and 100,000+ asylum seekers, I'd be tempted to just give them all a nice EU passport and send them on their way to Germany. And then ask about that debt relief thing again

I still maintain that this won't stop and there's not much that can be done about it by trying to "fix" things in Europe. The source of the problem is in places like Syria, Libya, Eritrea and so on, but as Knoxville said the things our governments have done there are probably completely unhelpful and likely a major contributor to the problem. Oops. So since we can't figure out that, just put up a few fences and pretend everything's fine. The media will quickly move on (they already have) and everyone will forget it for 6 months. Problem "solved"

Yes, that will be about the some of it.. I can imagine some Tory Ministers counting their blessings with immigration crisis in the Med or Calais.. as it has kicked Lords reform or abolishment into the long grass media attention wise.

Maybe a laser guided bomb or two to take out the people traffickers will be the best way forward.. though obviously extreme and illegal under international law but most likely pretty effective at least in the short to medium term. It could be in the same style as the bombing of drug cartel bosses in clear and present danger.

There is also a chart showing those seeking asylum. Nigeria barely made the top 10, and Ghana is nowhere to be seen.

And, that chart does not show where the Calais migrants are from! It shows people from which countries are claiming asylum IN the UK.
Why the hell are Pakistanis,Iranians,Albanians, Afghans, Srilanksns, Nigerians and Bangladeshis claiming asylum? These are stable countries!

The interesting thing is that almost everyone comes via Libya. Without a Libyan govt. to enforce border control, all these Central Africans are entering unchecked. Why can't the country be stabilized with British or US troops and at the same time get tons of free oil.

Where persecution occurs to the point certain people have to flee for their lives. If we believe that creed/colour/race/sexual orientation/gender etc. should be no influence on quality of life then we have an obligation to help those for whom it is.

Can you back that up? The pictures above just show that those coming by boat come via libya. I suspect many more come over land.
