Re: Should HS2 proceed : Yes or No?

I'm not trying to say that Thorpe park is an amazing British attraction full of culture, It's not, It's just an average theme park which really isn't that bad though a little outdated when even compared to blackpool. However I'd still go back and I also think that any venture into Europe is just silly to wait stupid times to get on rides ect. Furthermore, I don't think hs2 will launch with inflated costs other than what is caused by supply and demand much like current tickets.

Thorpe Park cannot justify massive prices, though, even here in Rip-Off Britain. Disney, though...

There are plenty of discounts available it was only 120quid for the 2 of us??? £60pppn is cheap if you ask me when it includes breky and 2 days at the park plus a set of fast pass' especialy when you can't get a premier inn or whatever else at that price

I'm not saying it is expensive. You seem to have missed this point.
It is cheap and you just found it even cheaper. American theme parks in the UK will not be anywhere near as cheap.

Now, can we get past this rather drawn-out explanation of what had been a mere throwaway joke, and get back to the topic?

How about we put this another way:

I presume all of you that think HS2 is a good idea are happy for every man, woman and child in the country to pay over £1600 each for this project? Assuming it doesn't go even further over budget?

Be interesting to see who signed it off, who is running the project, and who is friends with who...

If I thought it would all go to UK workers, doing a full days graft over and over, I'd be utterly extatic.

If I thought UK diggers and UK trucks, driven by UK workers, owned by UK corporations, paying UK taxes was where the dough was going, I'd be OK with it.

Will Hitachi or Bombardier (or who ever finally makes the actual trains) make them in the UK, with UK sourced components and run them on UK steel rails fitted by UK workers?

    Oh I do hope so.....

That's the nature of a tax and central government system. They are making decisions that will ultimately benefit the country but not every decision will benefit everyone each time. I guess outcomes of better rail infrastructure include benefits for the economy, which mean more money in the long run for other projects, and better control of emissions, which mean a better future for our descendants.

that IS the theory of government and of long term choices, yes.

I hope that cmes to pass... but I truly don't see a railway will do that. Not honestly.

If we were meant to be happy about this and all the other things the government spends our money on, nobody would ever vote in the elections.

Thrope Park is a relative bargain for the UK.. 55GBP for a ticket. Compare that to Disneyland US at 80GBP, Disneyworld at 84GBP or Disneyland Paris at 48GBP. I'd anticipate Disney UK to be in the 90-100GBP range.

That said, none are worth a trip from the Midlands, as Alton Towers remains superior.

    No.

I'm all for a complete revision and overhaul of UK transport and infrastructure, but to me it feels like a blinkered London-centric/urbanite project again. The railways in the North are horrendous, trying to get from east to west in the North is an appalling experience (from Nottingham to Manchester for example) it can take 2-3 hours at best with over crowded carriages.

I view that as a plus.. Where's the thrill if there isn't an actual risk of fatality?
