P2P filesharing, the rights and wrongs

A few months ago the son of one of my mums friends got arrested for sharing MP3s.
    - load of cops came in a took all his PC's/CD's/DVD's/everthing computer realated

    - Now this shook me up big time, we've all heard of the few cases of people geting done in the states (including th 8yo girl) but this was a 17yo boy who ive meet, and talked to, and only lives about an hour away, who happend to do a small amount of filesharing, as do a lot of my friends.

    - What are people views on this?

How small is small, thats the problem, they are only going after quantity, if you share loads of files, but not necessarily download much then they will still come after you.

Personally, after a friend of a friend got a £5,000 fine and had all his gear taken away I stopped, I really dont see the point anymore, no ones invincible.

If he was indeed selling, then thats what he deserved, anyone selling the stuff is mad IMO, personal use still isnt right, but the law of averages says they wont come after small fry, especially if its for your own consumption, selling on the other hand is a completely different ball game.

Its people selling it that tend to get caught tbh, personally I never sell on what I download and if I enjoy an Album/movie/game I'll buy it every time, used to have a rather large kvcd collection, nearly all of them have now been replaced with legit dvd's.

Exactly. Access to new music and bands will now be limited to hearsay from mates and the radio. Just hearsay from mates then. And I have no friends

No, you are never completely safe, I run several different firewalls and other pieces of software to ensure I'm as safe as possible but thats as far as you can go.

...and whats wrong with that? Always had a job when I was a teen - builds character!

    CD's are a rip-off though IMHO

I still have hunderds of cassette tapes I made when I was a kid/teen copied from CD's/vinyl/other tapes of friends etc.... can I still get fined for this?

The people involved are not really gonna bother with people that download a few tunes here there and the odd movie, they are going after the people that actually prepare the files for download and powershare them.
