Now they say red meat is bad for us..

And it apparently increases our chance of getting bowl cancer by a third if we eat too much..

Does this mean that all cavemen died of bowl cancer?

you cant compare us to cavemen, our bodies have changed and adapted to suit our environment since then

"too much" is relative. It's like everything. If you eat too much of anything there's going to be risks that u'll be unwell. They're just scaremongering.

As long as you have a varied and balanced diet you dont need to worry. If you eat steak for breakfast lunch and dinner every single day of your life, then you've got a problem.

TBH I've lost interest in what does and doesn't cause cancer- theres about 1 'revelation' a week in the papers claiming that [insert food that everyone eats or activity that everyone does] possibly causes cancers or tumours etc..

Just live your life in a normal way and don't take it all too seriously, I say.

Bowel cancer risk was a third higher for those who regularly ate over two 80g portions of red or processed meat a day, compared to less than one a week.
I doubt anyone eats that quantity of red meat on a regular basis.

Who actually eats like, 10 rashers of bacon in one day, or 15 sausages? You have to be seriously ill to eat that much in the first place! Even if it doesn't give you cancer, it will make you constipated!
    that's the chicken!!!

    Im with Klarrix.

Ive known a number of people who didnt drink, didnt smoke, ate very v ery sensibly and still got cancer in one form of another. And i know plenty of unhealthy drinking smoking burger munching people who died of old age without cancer in sight.

    Its a horrible desease tho!

Actually they haven't changed all that much. 50,000 years or so is a very small time in evolutionary terms.

The ammount of red meat that many pre-neolitic peoples ate was not as great as many people think, though it often was significant. The meat they were eating was whatever they could hunt in the wild, wich is healthier (not counting parasites) than the processed meat obtained from modern livestock. Many groups of people of this era also lived near large bodies of water and ate more seafood than any other kind of meat.

Also, the life expectancy of these people was so short that the vast majority of people never lived long enough for cancer to be a significant risk.

Anyway, this is old news, various groups have been warrning agaisnt red meat for years/decades.

Well, research conducted roughly 5 years ago found that the average American amle would have 2lbs (nearly 1 Kilo) of UNDIGESTED red meat trapped in his bowel by the time he was 50.

Though no definitive link has yet been found, it's believed that this is a major contributing factor towards bowel cancer.

Imagine having nearly a kilo of festering meat in your bowel! Of course, a diet high in roughage (indigestible fibre) helps clear some of this out, as well as helping to control cholesterol.

And, I guess, there's something to be said for colonic irrigation.... iirc, the average weight of what they politely call 'impacted fecal matter' rinsed from a first time irrigatee is roughly 2lbs... so revolting as it may seem, it could be saving your life!
