    Petrol Crisis: MPG

The impending doom of the planet earth due to lack of Petrol has started me on a MPG quest - last night i managed 34MPG on the way home, and bettered it with 36MPG on the way in this morning. Anyone else having a go? And shut up if you've got a derv

Oh and what car did you manage it in - mine: SEAT Leon Cupra 240bhp

normally 38.3mpg in the clio atm i can get 42.9mpg if i let the car roll on the hills when stuck in traffic going to town, plenty places round here that have huge downhill stints so I can keep the 70-75 speed on the way home riding in nutral.

If I really give it some stick mine can get down to 32-33MPG. If I drive nice it goes up to 38-9MPG.

At the minute its a mix and its 35.9MPG

Aircon off at a steady 60 on the M4, Hayes to Slough - 36 mpg - thats a 2.3l Golf.

There is no fuel crisis other than the one perpetrated by idiots with 3/4 of a tank queuing up at pumps.

Yeah i'm pretty happy with that tbh, and i've not been driving to much like a ninny either - 80 on (private) motorway and a mix of 30-60 on the twisties.

Last time we had the protests I filled up as usual and then drove VERY economically... It was an old K plate Astra... no onboard computer or any of that guff. I just filled it up and then tried not to let it go over 1500RPM ever.... Made it through the fuel shortage with less than half a tank used...

SO just for the crack I carried on, just to see how many miles I could eek out of one tank... 625 miles before I botttled it with the needle well into the red.

Lots and lots of clutch dipping and coasting was the answer... plus travelling late at night and early in the morning meant I rarely, if ever, sat in a queue and there was hardly ever anyone behind me to mind me hitting less than fifteen miles an hour as I just coasted up to the brow of a hill before rolling off down the other side.

I don't bother dipping the clutch with my current car, it has the fuel shut off on overrun feature built in, even MORE economical!

Nick - and thats why electric/petrol hybrids are so brill, as they collect all that otherwise lost energy. I'm a big fan of this technology, certainly in the short term until we can sort out cheaper, cleaner less-middle-easty fuel

    2L DOHCi Sierra estate.

I drive economicly in it 90% of the time (Tyres still plenty legal and knocking on 40,000 miles now if that gives you any idea). That's not driving slowly or thinking about fule useage though.

About 40MPG average (mostly back roads round my way).
52MPG on the last motorway run.

    About 20MPG if driven hard.

    ------------------------------------------------

    2.9i 4x4 Sierra estate

Running low on fuel late at night (no filling stations so to speak) I ONCE managed 29MPG on the comp.

Averages around 22/23 with sensible driving.

that may be so, but at the moment they're not actually very good because no-one has mated the technology with a derv engine. on a run a prius only manages 39mpg! thats hopeless!
