    University Insurance

Well i'm off to university soon, and I think i'm going to need insurance after speaking to a police officer in Reading. Apparently theres a break in per week, almost always into ground floor rooms through the window. Seeing as i'm a male, i live in the area already and i dont wear contacts or have any medical conditions, i've been placed on the ground floor (strongly against my wishes).

So who do you guys have your university insurance with? I really should be more organised

people who wear contacts need ensuites, ensuites aren't on the ground floor. Women also get preference to ensuite rooms, because they're gonna spend a whole hour in there

Do your parents have household insurance? Often it will be covered by that at no extra cost or maybe a slight bit more. But if not, yes its worth it. I knew two people in Leeds who had thier entire houses emptied while they were away for the summer holidays.

I did not get insurance for all three years of uni and it sort of paid off since I was not robbed. Go with Endsleigh though they are the best for students.

That's the most stupid thing i've ever heard. Why would people with contacts *need* an ensuite? i'm quite sure they dont have en suites at home, and i'm also quite sure they have a spare pair of glasses to wear when their eyes are puffy and sore. Women need ensuites cos tbh, sharing a bathroom with various other blokes is just revolting.

You may want to look at cis insurance too.

For my house, I have 12k worth of stuff insured new for old and it's costing me £78 a year. Given it may be more for you depending on what area your moving too.

Endsleigh wanted £34 a quarter for 4k of stuff btw.

edit: I think Id lie to them and say you wear contacts for an ensuite room!

And you think i'm looking forward to sharing a bathroom with people who are almost certainly throw up over every surface in the bathroom?

@ atomic: I'm staying in a hall and i dont think that CIS will insure me for that.

Actually altho Endsleigh seem to be the biggest one

I cam across Saxon Insurance, another insurance company especially for students and so far it looks like it is cheaper than endsleigh, i shall however see if it is as comprehensive as the endleigh cover (walk in theft etc)

So i am on the look out to, but i am going to go with either of these too.

    Cheers

    Ian

    ps address is www.saxoninsurance.com
PPS the insurance is actually provided (or underwritten) by Norwich Union

Endsleigh's policy is rubbish compared to Saxon's consider you pay out x2 the amount!

From a brief look at their website you seem to be correct! Glad I haven't renewed my Endsleigh contract, this looks a good deal cheaper...

EDIT: Their optional cover calculator doesn't actually recalculate the total, just sends you back to the previous page with nothing changed. Pay peanuts, get monkeys I suppose.

Why do so many people recommend Endsleigh? A friend of mine got screwed by them and I have heard nothing but bad reports about them (they were investigated on Watchdog too). I'm sure they are not the worst, but they really target Students hard and have special deals witht the NUS and Uni's to get advertising deals etc. Not because they are a wonderful caring company. I know students have better things to worry about and this will probably be thier first experience with buying insurance but its worth looking around. There is no reason why you should go with a special student deal, don't forget that student are concidered a very high liability.

If you wish to cover the contents of your room whilst unoccupied during vacations, up to a maximum of 35 days continuously, and up to a maximum of £3000, then you will need to take out our vacation top up cover.
What? This is when you are most at risk and a max of £3,000. Thats rather poor.

I pay about the same each month as most students pay but get everything covered up to £50,000 and £2,000 cash, mobile, acidental damage/loss, travel etc, the whole works.

Also check your bank. Barclays insurance is very very good and i think they have a student discount.

The worst thing about insurace is you never know if they will pay out until something bad happens. It's like striking a match to see if it works.

Good luck and enjoy uni mate

Because they give them money, and NUS are a bunch of *****ers who will be first against the wall when the revolution comes.....

I had to make a claim... simple lighting strike yes?

No, they sent my gear to a company called lakeside i think it was, were the guy valued it at about £100 under what i had insured it for, said yes, looks like over voltage, but it might not be.

Endsleigh then out of the goodness of their heart made me an offering of about half of the value of the gear. The idea been i wouldn't have time to take them to court, to get the money i was owed.

Luckily for me i'd bought seagate HDDs, seagate felt so sorry for my story that they replaced all them for me, saving me a cool £1,100 way to go guys!
    (they were in warenty uc).

In short those ******s pray on people been nieve going for the nearest the one with the nice friendly office etc. Like most NUS things anyone who wasn't a moronic weed smoking 'socialist' would of told them to sling their hook. But no.

Try your bank, often they give you good deals, when your in uni accomodation u probably have insurance there too (normally about £10 a term).
