Good move chief_barker. And welcome to the forums
Been 6 days for me now
my dad gave up, and said he got his sense of smell back!!
Well done, chief_barker and Famished!!!
I keep thinking of doing the same, as I smoke 'bout 10 cigarrettes a day, which do me nothing but good.
After reading this thread, as well as hearing from some of my colleagues to work that they have decided to quit smoking, I think I wanna quit smoking as well.
Damn, I'll just finish my current pack (with 8 cigarrettes inside it)
If all of you just send any cigs to me, I'll be sure to put them to a good home(my lungs) and you won't have to put up with that nasty smoking thing anymore
Thank you for the kind welcome.Originally Posted by Matt1eD
Do try, you need the will power but just deciding to give up - if you take it seriously works. Alot of people plan their giving up, and keep on procrastinating, best thing is just to stop when you run out.Originally Posted by zachig
I haven't had one since Saturday night, and I don't intend to start again. I gave up for more than a year, but gradually drifted back into it earlier this year- which in hindsight was pretty daft. If I gave up once I can give up again.
Patches are a complete waste of time and money. They make the cravings last longer. Nothing more. Cravings last for a maximum of 4 days after giving up, and the ones on the 3rd and 4th days are so pathetically weak that they can be totally ignored.Originally Posted by Nick
Get Allan Carr's easy way from Amazon.com
90% of people that read it successfully give up. Its the only thing that I know to have worked on anyone, and in fact everyone I know thats used it has given up permanently. It worked on me 2 1/2 years ago.
"In a perfect world... spammers would get caught, go to jail, and share a cell with many men who have enlarged their penises, taken Viagra and are looking for a new relationship."
Nah, I don't agree with that at all.
I've tried to give up three times in the past and the cravings were just as bad a week on as they were on day one when I tried last time.
The patches have seriously worked for me, taking away pretty much all but the 'habit' craving of going outside, which I combat with celery sticks.
At £6.50 for four weeks supply on prescription, I don't see how they're a waste of money either.
I read Easy Way and I, sadly, saw through the trick he uses... You need to have the right attitude for that book to work and I'm just too cynical.
Still, if it works for others when it hasn't worked for me I wouldn't deter anyone from trying it.
Patches are doing the trick and I'll be sticking with them and not smoking again... and since I've been a smoker since I was about 14/15 (which is NOT big OR clever OR even remotely attractive) I reckon being weaned off the nicotine is the best way for me.
20 years and you're giving up - good on ya.
happy 6000th
It's something like 40% Italians under 15 smoke!
Sorry mate, but that is all poop. Its well recognised that to give up smoking, often more than will power is required. Patches, gum and inhalers are all very useful, as is psychological support. Medical research is quite sure on this, as am I after working in a chest clinic for 6 months!Originally Posted by badass
Not around too often!
Yep more than will power is required. Read the book and some willpower and you're in for a better chance of giving up than wasting money on some rip off patches.Originally Posted by menthel
Of course if you can show me the results of the medical research that shows patches are better than reading Allan Carr's book, I'll eat my words

badass, dude, at £6.50 for four weeks worth, my patches are cheaper than the book!
Unlike the book, they replace my nicotine source, making life easier on me and the family while I quit.
I still say that each method has it's merits but I think to dismiss something out of hand is wrong. Fair enough if it patches didnt work for you and the book did, but don't say other methods don't work just because they failed for you... (Assuming you tried them, of course)
Edit: Taken from the NHS Quit Smoking website (www.givingupsmoking.co.uk/how_to_give_up/a-z/)
Now available on prescription, NRT is clinically proven to be twice as effective as the cold turkey method.
When I gave up the last time I found that the best subsitute for cigarettes was shots of spirits. Since that discovery turned me into a semi-alcoholic, I have to find another substitute this time round- and I hate celery.
