Web site ranking - Google

I have a small and rather pathic site about my grandads narrowboat, which generates quite a bit of intrest as its steam powered (one of only about 6in the country)

After i created it, i submitted it to google, and was quite plesantly suppresed when i googled the name of the boat (emilyanne) and my site came up as the fourth on the list. :
rockon: - Where it stayed for a good 3months.
- However, ive just tryed the search again, and we now seam to be at the bottom of page five!

So basically im wondering what i can do to get us back on the first page!
- What does google use to rank pages?
- Whats a good way to get it publisised?

Google will priority link your page if you are a corporate whore who adds to their bottom line.

it goes on how many other pages link to your site, so adding a link to your site in your hexus signature will help, or getting affiliate links on other sites

also make sure you were not checking on .co.uk before and now on .com....

So basicaly i just have to plaster my URL around the place?
- For instance, i could put a link to it from my main website, and in my various sig's, and try and get the other steam narrowboat websight i know of to place a link on there sight, etc?

- Does it matter where or on which page the link is, or how often is on there, or how often its used/clicked on?
- Does it matter how well rated that site is? (is this where the whole mutural linking thing comes in)

yup, higher ranked sites with ur url count more, u got it mate!

dont matter how much it is clicked really, just it being there.

also google updated the way they search a few weeks ago which caused alot of my sites to go down in rank, they have released a new version again in the last week or so, which caused my sites to go back to page 1 again, but it has yet to reach all the servers.

Ok, thanks everyone.

Ive added a link to the site on various signatures of a few diffrent forums, and arranged to havea link placed on the links page of another simular site, so we'll see how it goes eh!

here is what my experiments in google rank found.

your page title matters a lot stick your most likely search terms in there. When you put a
link in your sig use the same search words.
