No bitterness, i just hate their smug superior attitude about everything, and the way they cant seem to grasp the fact that quantum mechanics isnt finished yet, and generally think theyre smarter than everyone just because they have stupid confusing ways of arguing with funny definitions of perfectly normal words. At least physicist have the common sense to make up new words for stuff. Grrrrr, they annoy me so much, arts students in general as a rule, bunch of dossing gits the lot of them with their bloody mickey mouse courses. Oh well, suppose someone needs to be local shop manager*.
*I know some arts courses are hard, i just need to vent on them a bit today cos they have a bloody week off to 'read' where as i get 2 deadlines this week and same number of lectures as always

I've come to my own conclusion about theoretical physics.

They've found a very clever way to get paid for smokeing pipes and stroking beards

Hey! I dont have a beard or smoke a pipe, and i do theoretical physics, it gets left to us to do all the stuff the experimentalists dont know enough maths for.

I don't see any denying of the beard strokeing there.

Question is: if every force has an equal but opposite reaction then how can forces be unbalanced - i.e acceleration?

I believe the answer is to do with newtons second law, every object will remain stationary or at constant velocity unless acted upon by an external force.

So acceleration is caused by an external force.

Now that could be totally wrong but seems to make sense. BUT what is the external force?

    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks
    Ben
I dont know if its been covered yet, but its down to interpretation. The equal an opposite reaction is on the object exerting the force.
i.e. If I push a car (using my hand) with a force of 100 newtons, the car applies a force to my hand of 100 newtons in the opposite direction. The car accelerates because the forces on the car are unbalanced.
If I stand on the earth, I exert a force on the earth and it exerts an equal and opposite force on my feet

F = mA, that's all you need to consider...

But like Stigggeh, this is why I got out of Engineering after Uni. Tax is so much easier...
