    iTunes

Im not a big iTunes fan
    - ive always just kept my files sorted neatly and used winamp, and i have iRiver h-140 which again i just browes using the file tree.

But, everyone at uni uses it, with myTunes (or outTunes) so im using occational now.

I have two questions, firstly, is there quick/easy way of going though and removing all the dead entrys (ie when i move the file to a diffrent place on the HDD)
    - And secondly, why does it use 60/70% CPU all the time its running, even when paused!!

Itunes is great, but like you I don't know how to remove all the dead files all at once, but I'm glad you got the CPU issue sorted as I often use iTunes in the background while playing games like BF2...

So anyone able to save the day?

IIRC it has some kind of consolidate library button, which does that kind of thing.
But when you really get down to it, iTunes = llama.

    - I think i'd rather not, give the the time and effort i've put into sorting all my files into logical folders!

It would, it will peg the cpu in order to encode the music faster. If you want to do other stuff you can change the thread priority in task manager

Why not just hit that button? iTunes is quite good at organising your music for you in a logical way (the most logical way you can anyway). I have just set a folder called c:/MP3s/ as my iTunes music folder, and it organises them into there. When i add a new track it is included in that folder automatically, no need to mess about manually. The inside is orgnaised into folders per artist, and then per album

I personally prefer iTunes over any other media player. Much better than winamp for browsing/sorting your music, obviously better than wmp and uh well they are the main competitors to iTunes really.

Because if you own Tom Jones' Reload album you (like my GF) end up with 15 folders of "Tom Jones feat. Kerys Matthews/Reload/01 Burning Down The House.mp3" with one track in each!

Most people I organised their music into Artist/Album folders and had random tracks in the root directory- it would become a lot more difficult to navigate to loads of random songs if they were each burried in two deep directories

Yeah but if your music is tagged properly then it shouldn't be an issue

plus how often do you actually look at your mp3 file system? Much easier to browse trhoguh it using iTunes and if you want a copy a file for whatever purpose you can just right click->show file

But it isnt, thats one of the main reasons i hate iTunes, that and its insistence that anything i might ever want to play gets in its library, meaning i used to end up with random orphaned entries when id downloaded stuff of the net and listened to it.

Basically its awful, winamp does everything it can, better, and with the nicest windowshade mode you could ever hope for (with mmd3)

    http://www.cyberfxp.f2s.com/RemoveDeadTracks.js

This little javascript app will go through all your library and remove all the dead tracks. Run this while itunes is open. You can see it working because your hdd will go crazy while its scanning.

Or you could try Foobar200 - think it has an option to remove dead files and clean out repeat files too
