    Royal Bank of Scotland scam?

    I just got an email from the Royal Bank of Scotland saying I have to update my details due to a new server. I dont even have a account with them! They provide a link too.....

    Im guessing its a scam. Heres the email-

    Dear Customers,

    The Royal Bank of Scotland always look forward for the high security of our clients. Some customers have been receiving an email claiming to be from The Royal Bank of Scotland advising them to follow a link to what appear to be a The Royal Bank of Scotland web site, where they are prompted to enter their personal Online Banking details. The Royal Bank of Scotland Digital Banking is in no way involved with this email and the web site does not belong to us.

    The Royal Bank of Scotland is proud to announce about our new updated secure system. We updated our new SSL servers to give our customers a better, fast and secure online banking service.

    Due to the recent update of the servers, you are requested to please update your account info at the following link.

    I would guess that if you look at the email you recieved, the URL is different from the one above (which was probably the anchor text for the url)

    all of these mails are a scam ! Barclays have never mailed me regarding my online banking , its always a letter.

    If this email isn't a scam, I'll eat my own hair.

    No bank will ever ask you to update your details via an email. Phone them if you're unsure.

    erm...is it me or does this line of your post not give it away Noni?

    Is thisthe first one of these you have seen? Expect to get some from CitiBank, WellsFargo, Barclays, Halifax, HSBC and all the others. I get them regularly and don't have accounts at any of them.

    I get a bunch from German banks for some reason.
    Thunderbird is well trained however and junks them immediatly

    One of my accounts (an abandoned one of mine) receives about 200 spam a day, yahoo spam filter however is well trained. Don't really use that account anymore anyway, just signed up to a couple of sites with it though.

    First indication of a scam, apart form the fact that no bank would ever ask you to sumbit these details, is the scammers lack of ability to string together a coherent sentence.

    If that email is a cut-and-paste, then its very obviously a scam - just check the grammar, its quite bad...!

    That aside, a bank would never email customers with confusing terms like "ssl" or "server", or give those as reasons for you to update your details. if you are ever unsure, ring that bank and check with them.
