Volume increasing during adverts!!!!

Does anyone else notice the massive volume increase during adverts, it's really starting to annoy me. My new TV is ment to have some kind of volume software that sorts this out but it's not working......

Do you think that they increase the volume to gain our attention?

I presume you're talking about $ky? Ads are recorded at the maximum permissible audio level so you notice them. Normal programmes are not. That's why it's so annoying when the ads come on!

If you have ALC on your telly that may help.

This happens all the time on ITV and channel 4 using freeview. I can imagaine why they do it but it's just annoying have the mess around with the volume every 10 minutes.

i know what you mean about e4, but rather than it being the adverts that are very loud, its the rest of the programs that are quiet. im not sure why they do that, but it is annoying, especially when you are watching late at night.

Theres a standard in the mediia industustry, I forget the name, but for programmes they must be recorded or re-transmitted to a specific volume.

Unfortuanately its not an industry-wide standard as its a channel by channel thing but the volumes in adverts are't made to the standards typically and as has been mentioned before, are usually transmitted at the highest possible volume.

Seeing as digital TV transmits programme information and other such data surely there should be a client side control to normalise audio?

I don't know myself, I barely watch Freeview but I do remember this little problem on Sky.

Have you notticed that the adverts are also a much higher picture quality than the tv shows? Its most notticable on an LCD set tho.

Would be nice if they put half the effort into regular shows as they do the adverts

Apparently, the effect of "loud adverts" is caused by higher average loudness over the course of the advert, not the peak loudness, which is set by the broadcaster. This is something that is hard for broadcasters to control. Advertisers work within the rules to make their ads stand out, by using various clever techniques to make an advert seem louder when it isn't...

That is spot on. i had never noticed this until i got an lcd telly, and the quality of the ads really good picture wise compare with the rest of the broadcast. saying that though, its the same on the bbc channels, poor quality programs, then almost hi-def clips of people dancing/wheelchair basketball/acrobatics. im not going to even start about the license fee. grrr.
