Thread: 11 year old hangs self because mother stopped her from watching Big Brother

I'm with the majority of the people on here - it's such a shame for a young life to be taken in such a tragic way, but, despite all the criticisms levelled at it - you can *not* blame BB for it.

It's a tenuous link at best, and the Daily Mail have done it again. She didn't kill herself because she didn't get to watch Big Brother, From what it appears, she killed herself because she was sulking over being given a punishment by her parents, which it's likely was justified, and which millions of parents will at some point do something similar.

It's a combination of unfortunate situations, and although obviously I don't know the full story, it appears like it was just a sulk or a snap tantrum gone horribly, horribly wrong.

Saying that society is better off without people who are depressed is a f***ing sickening thing to say. People that say that have obviously not had any personal experience with anybody that's going through a lot of stress or depression, because sometimes life deals you s**t and it can be difficult to cope, but if you ask for support from your friends and family, they should be there to help guide you through low points in your life. It's difficult to accept the fact that you need help, but once it's been acknowledged, the sufferer is halfway to recovery. It just sounds like this girl was keeping all her feelings bottled up, and her parents may not have seen this.

Obviously my opinions are only based on what I've read on the Daily Mail site and the comments on here, so if any of the facts have been mis-reported my opinions could differ, but from the information I have at my disposal, that is where my opinion currently stands.

Heh, I seriously don't think I said anything to be 'censored'. What I mean't by 'laughing' is not at the death or tragic waste of life but at the extreme stupidity involved. Tbh, I feel that the 'title' of the article is misleading enough to catch peoples eye and there was probably alot more going on to cause this.

Also the simple logic of "oooh, I can't watch BB so I'm going to off my self...uh oh do they have TV in the afterlife?" is pffffffft. Then again, Mike Fishcake said it better. I know exactly what he means and I have personally had my fair share of crappy hands being dealt by life but most of us tend to have the resolve to go on. It is a real shame that it happened the way it did. I hope I didn't offend too many people with my comments....

'nuff said, I'm not one to get all antsy about sensitive topics, to each their own.

The article is obivously sensationalised (headling in particular), biased to get readers and a typical daily mail style of reporting - so most of whats in it can be taken with a pinch of salt.

We don't know the kind of life the child has had - ok so her parents have split up, her mum has a new boyfriend...things I cannot personally relate to on any level, but i'm sure that it would have a horrible effect on you at that age. Heck just moving house was bad enough when I was that age...if my parents had split I'd have been unconsoleable.

There are millions of other things that could have caused her to kill herself here - things that we will never know about..theres no evidence for it but what if she was being abused in some way (mentally or otherwise) by her mums new partner? Her mother may not even have known about it (that kind of thing does happen).

Thats an extreme example but i'm just trying to say that there are lots of potential reasons that she could have killed herself. Could also have been bullying at school - the article says there was no evidence of it but in most cases there isnt - you don't tell your teachers or parents you are being bullied do you? We've seen it a few times where bullying has caused young children to take their own lives.

Its a sad, sad thing to have happened, and even worse that she knew how to do it - and what to do. I don't think I would have even had that concept at that age..just goes to show whats happening to our society

It seems like a stunt to annoy her parents that just went horribly wrong.

    A shame really.

Surely you hang yourself, or you dont.

You could pretend to, but it would be hard.

She was 11 for crying out loud, how hard is that to grasp?

James.robinson, you're comments are shockingly distasteful.

Thinking about it, the article states her age was 11 and that she is a year 7 pupil. So, unless the article has mistaken her age, for her to be 11 it means that she would have been starting year 7 (Secondary school) this September.

The stress of this could have been to blame. In my experience the swap from primary to secondary was a pretty big leap as I went from a school with 100 kids to a comprehensive with 2400 (and also straight into being the youngest there). The whole process is a big change in lifestyle and is a difficult time hormonally and mentally as you mature from being a kid to a young adult.

This aspect looks to have been completely missed in this article.

Actually, it depends when her birthday is my son started yr7 at 11, his Birthday isn't until December, and my youngest Son will start yr7 at 11, his Birthday is in October.

I was 11 when I started secondary School, my Birthday is August so I had a whole year of being 11 in that first year

I dont care what you think really.

A girl has apparently killed herself over probably the worst TV programme ever broadcast. The simple fact she liked the show is bad enough.

All Big Brother viewers need to follow in her footsteps tbh.

    I cant stand the show.

    Sigh.

James.Robinson, do you ever believe what the newspapers tell you? You sound like a typical tabloid newsreader, taking in 'facts' which are watered down to sensationalise a story and provide moderate entertainment to the idiot masses.

I doubt Big Brother was even to do with her death.

What, along with everyone else who doesn't share your taste in light entertainment? Probably best - after all, she might have grown up to like something else that you didn't, and that really WOULD be a capital crime, wouldn't it? Of course, she was only 11, but that's really no excuse for liking a programme that you don't, is it? She really SHOULD have developed a more erudite and refined taste by that age. Why, heavens to betsy, do you realise she might even have ENJOYED the show? One shudders to think at the potential havoc that she might have caused to society had she lived long enough to go through school, have a boyfriend, exams, a job, make friends...you know, dangerous stuff like that.

I don't like Big Brother. I think it's vacuous contrived ****, and the sooner we're finally rid of it the better. That said, I stop short of euthanising children as a method of reducing its ratings. You make me sick; utterly, utterly sick.

Then perhaps that might be better expressed by posting a thread about, oh, how bad Big Brother is than gloating over the death of an 11 year old child and suggesting that anyone with similar tastes in television programmes, FFS, should kill themselves too.
