It's sad - but in the 20 odd years that it was there - no-one did any preservation work on it.

20 years in the open is bad - 20 years in the open with nice salty sea air is worse

The owner was approached several times with offers to preserve/restore it - be he wanted them to pay for the honour of doing it.

He just wanted the Vulcan to bring people into his pleasure flights/flying lessons.

Wait till next year - then not only will there be one immaculate Vulcan - but it'll be overhead.

I do have some photo's of it from a few years ago *maybe 5* on film and it was rotting through in places then. Really should get the film scanner that I'm planning...

*sorry - geeking out here... *

guess... id try and boycott the pleasure flights and stuff if i could think of ONe person that would actually go on one. but i cant so thats no good.

crying shame. tho not suprising as we managed to scrap every single battleship/battlecruiser we had. while the americans have 8 in preservation.

If it's the Royal Opera House or other such 'worthwhile' heritidge projects then the Lottery people can't give you enough money. *wasn't it 80 million to the Opera House?*

Something from the heyday of British aviation, they really couldn't give a stuff about.

We need to preserve this stuff. Especially as the Cold War is now on the National Curriculum.

But no-one really seems to care.

Although - one of the previous posts I made on the grounding of Sally B was very well received here. However other forums *not mentioning any names* were basically saying that it doesn't belong in the air as it's unsafe and should be changed into tin cans as it's a point of history thats best off forgotten.

It's nice posting stuff like this here where people appreciate it.

Im really happy that they are going to get this amazing and beautiful aircraft flying again. Im not patriotic in any way but the vulcan is one of those things that can make you really proud to be british.

I've got a pic of me standing next to it with the ad for flying lessons just beside. Even a good few years ago, 391 was in an appalling condition. It was just completely neglected; there wasn't even any attempt to retard the corrosion. It was terribly saddening to see, but there was no way that it was going to be made safe for static display, let alone airworthy.

The Vulcan at Hendon in the bomber hanger is absolutley immaculate. I was really impressed with all their exhibits all restored as new condition. Best of all the museum is free entry!

    It's pretty good that one.

Just a shame they had to cut it up to get it into the museum.

Been put back together very nicely though - you can only see the join if you look very carefully. It's positioning was very well done - end of the refuelling probe is only a few inches away from a wall.

As for Hendon being free - it's great. I love the place.

Another one in good nick. Will be nice once the Airspace hanger is fully open and has all the lights on.

Airspace does look good though *from my sneaky peaky inside*

Beautiful aircraft, drove past the one in my hometown of Southend today. Sad to see it deteriorating slowly as it sits there.

The one at Southend is one of the better ones. It still runs and does high speed taxi runs on the airport..

Needs a few little bits doing to it - got some maintenance work underway later this year.

The company I work for BAE Systems has sponsored that and from the promo shots it looks really good and a darn site more interesting than a normal 'static' display. The impressiveness of aircraft is seeing them fly.

Only been to one air show and worked next to another (an interesting situation for meetings) and to see things fly is really impressive. The rate of turn and power is phenomonal.

They said the very first flight won't be open to the public, but they will have an offical launch. However I doubt they will be able to keep it that quiet and the airfiled will probably be surrounded by people!

Once they start doing fast taxi runs - with the nose lifting off before applying the brakes/chute then there will be LOTS of people watching from outside the field.

I'm going to the first public flight *will be for members of the Vulcan to the Sky Club only* which will be at Bruntingthorpe.

The Vulcan will also be based at Bruntingthorpe - seing as all the workshops and spares are there it kinda makes sence.

Guys please don't take offence, BUT why do you care about some plane? Would you do the same for a cpu, mobo, etc etc. I'm all for nostalgia BUT theres millions of people suffering in the 3rd world etc. I mean the way we now dispose of electronics is to ship them off to china for some child to take apart by a river- leading to lead in the water supply of the poor areas of china etc. This is a great guy yeah, no all he wants is the praise of people imo. Look at me i 'saved' the world from the loss of the vulcan, so it can pump more co2 and other nasty gases into the atmosphere imo! Now i'm not saying he's evil or anything, just that i think theres more important issues to deal with imo and that people don't think about it much imo. The whole fookin world needs to realise this and don't start saying we are doin stuff, we do virtually sweet F.A. for those in need. Now i know a lot of planes geeks browse the forum and i don't mean to offend, sorry if i do, it's your thing fair enough, thats kool. Call me a hippy, whatever, i don't care but these things geniunely depress me. We're so selfish and wrapped up in our world of luxuary. Think how it is for those that have to walk miles (not into the kitchen) just to get some water- and when they do get it it's probably got aids or lead in it or something- or hunt for there food! Some people'd say fook em, it's not our fault. What-ho old chap, we worked for it it's ours, is it bollocks, we crushed them, oppressed and got lucky. Ok china is doin ok monetary wise but look at the human rights, we campaign and fight for a plane, which ok may well be a great plane that saved us from evil dictatorship or whatever (not being flippent) but ffs we have better planes now that'll in the future save us from the pending doom of our comfortable lives being taken away, yet we don't do anything (read much) for the people of the world!

Sorry for the rant, just something that touches a nerve with me!

    /ends swampy mode

PS: All this is opinion and no way are you doin me for slander etc cus i'm totaly wrong, mentaly ill, invalid, upside down, inside out and can't even see past my rose tinted specticels!
