    must... resist

Far too many chavs chucking them at cars/people around here . As a family we like to get a box of nice colourful ones and a few rockets to let off in the garden every year. I cant see the harm in that.

I do think the age your allowed to buy them should be raised to 21. Anything to keep them out of the hands of chav kids.

Easy, next you'll be telling about this one time when someone said somthing to your kids and you got all defensive like and said 'Don't say that to my kids!'.

I was playing with fireworks from a young age, and setting fire to stuff, and everything, and all in a controlled invitroment. If you can let kids play with fire and exposive things in a safe inviroment, they wont have to hurt other people doing it.

Well said, I've played a part in fireworks for my sister's birthday several times since about 14, we were supervised, well taught of the risks and what to do to be safe. Why would I go around shooting bus-stops with cheap whizz-bangs when I could have a go with the proper stuff in my garden?

I'm quite surprised by the reactions on the 1st page of this thread, it sounds like you're welcoming the government to just come take another bit of fun away. Anyway isn't the age limit 18 now? It used to be 16, I seem to remember being told it had gone up just after I reached 16.

HARRY1 : I am just going to have to bite my tongue over your inane comment on, "which animals do fireworks scare" , i really could go to town with you over that , but will retain my dignity and temper , because people like you who see animals as nothing more than food on your plate are beneath my contempt.

I think what harry was implying is that the fact it scares animals shouldnt be used as an excuse/reason for fireworks to be banned. I mean with the amount of roadkill on the road should we stop people from driving? or just ban reliant robins hehehe

I do however whole heartedly agree that they should not be sold to anyone under 21. And if you are a chav of whatever age you cannot buy one. I am going on the record here...... I hate chavs, I could almost be proud to be British if these knobs didnt exist. I mean if the Jews were chavs you could understand (and appreciate) Hitlers angle. Which leads me on to an even more meaningful question.........is there such a thing as a Jewsih chav????
Well, I can cut it in half!

Just to make it clear unless it's not already- you have to be 18 to buy fireworks and the same sort of penalties apply to retailers who sell them to underaged people as those that sell booze and fags underage.

Similarly, I believe it's already an offence to let off fireworks in a public place- I think there's a specific offence relating strictly to fireworks, but if not it would certainly be covered by the various other public order/public endangerment offences.

So, there are already plenty of powers in law to deal with people who abuse fireworks. Sadly it seems there isn't the police manpower to enforce these laws. The answer is not to penalise the many because of the actions of the few, but to punish the few more effectively for breaking the existing (perfectly reasonable) rules.
