Why can't life have an F3 button...

I've lost a zalman fan that i need to rma back to scan, that I havent seen since the summer (due to uni) and now I cant see it anywhere in my room feels like £20 down the drain at the moment...

anyone else lost stuff, or is it just me at the moment

i miss place stuff all the time due to having too many little bits of crap lying around. Things like power bricks, USB cables, AV cables, drive cases, etc. all get middled up and mixed together.

Its more annoying when you loose a PC.
It happened to me last year. The bloody thing was responding to pings, and i could remote desktop to it, i just couldnt remember where in the house it was.

I was going to say "thats original" but i think i remember reading a Slashdot story about this a couple of years ago. If memory serves, someon at MIT actually managed to loose an entire server cluster. Like you they could talk to it, give it processing work to do and everything was working fine, they just couldn't find the thing to add more nodes to the cluster

Mindya, this was when i had >10pc's. Then it seriously does become an issue remembering which machine is which.

Not busted mgh - its the honest truth (it was the second machine in the loft in the end)

I was toying with the idea of putting RFIDs on everything, and putting sensors in the doors in my house.. when i own one. And so be able to know which room anything is in.

Not much use now as i'd have to put the RFIDs in myself, but when people switch from barcodes.

RFID is great, until someone else uses it to realise you've got iPod/Phone/Wallet etc all in respective places in the house and nicks em

yeh but without your database, they wouldn't be able to tell jewlry from yesterdays takeout pizza!

Plus they would only know which door way it went through last.

Chucking out enough power to scan and locate in a room where a passive RFID is is very hard... The more inteligent powered ones are easyer, but large.

I think an F7 key would really be more useful. Then my decent spelling would not be limited to the computer. On a side note I think the spelling on my posts has gotten allot better with the Firefox 2 spell checker.

I think some people need a F7.5 that also checks grammar!

I can put something down and - regardless of size/glowing lights etc - lose it within 30 seconds.. I think it's some kind of gift...

I don't know about an F3 key.. I've always thought a BFG would be more useful for every day instead but YMMV of course!

My dad managed to lose the car once by forgetting where he parked it and it wasn't outside the house. Was funny at the time.
