Screw the pub. You pull it out to impress your client. A small price to pay for something that might help close a deal.

The lack of an open platform to allow extensibility is a major issue, though.

I'd expect pretty much any touchscreen, no-keypad phone would look similar, as for giving examples of the on-screen number pad, well it's the default layout for phones as a whole and the numbers being at the top makes the most sense. Finally the main screen layout looks nothing alike.

Just a bit of jumping on the scandal bandwagon methinks...

well to be perfectly honest I do hope it fails

for a company that has an image to the consumer as being open and sharing unlike companies like M$ it would make you seem, it has over 200+ patents pending for this

sharing....yeah thats what you call something with more patents on it than Vista....(all im seeing so far is 2 for vista but im sure 200 isnt all of them)

i'd love to find flaws in apple products, unfortunately its tough job

i'd like to say this phone is stupid but...its impressive, not just in looks etc. But it does seem ridiculously easy to use, especially when you compare it to something shocking like a motorola

its not tiny but its not big, the screen will need some care, i'd hate to go out on a big drunken night with an apple phone in my pocket

i'm not excited because of this phone, i'm excited because its such a leap from everything out there right now that i'm eager to see what SE, Nokia and Samsung are going to respond with.

they've been cruising for years now making minimal advances, especially software and UI-wise. its nice to see a company come along and force advances

Thats just a weak argument, Patents are necessary for business like this, nothing to do with apple's "sharing" motto

its a phone, not an OS

well If there was any info on the Zune which looked like I would trust it I was going to use that but there isnt really a comparison between these in terms of what they do

My actual reason is that I hate Apple because of the fact that the iPod has become more of a fashion accesory than a portable music player that they have started to take off in terms of being popular and 'cool'....but who would believe that

I just think its all good and well to announce a product, but with things like that it would be the sort of thing that (if I was in the market which im not, its clearly out of many price ranges) that would be suitable for what I wanted it to do, and in my opinion a P990i seems a comparable choice in terms of the market

Unfortunately it does however seem like this could be a case of jack of all trades master of (not really none, as a proper OS on a portable device is an achievenment still) few

Well said, this is what I like about it. The first incarnation will have flaws, but as they did with the iPod Apple will keep at it until it's how they want it. This will force the others to act now and improve their phones or get left behind.

Its certainly a leap for Apple but not for the industry. The reason why the mobile phone market is 'cruising' is because the major players have the core product sorted and every segment sorted.

Look at it in the cold light of just another phone.

Touchscreen - SonyEricsson has this on the P900
Email - Balckberry and Nokia both have tools. Blackberry have a very competent, stable and secure product.
OS Type interface - Symbian and Windows embedded.
Music - SonyEricsson Walkman and Nokia have this.
    Camera phone - SonyEricsson/Nokia/Sharp/Toshiba
Internet - GPRS EDGE is pretty standard now.

Look at the iPhone website on Apple and the features are pretty laughable.

Interestingly, you can already buy a multi-touch MIDI controller: http://www.jazzmutant.com
Looks like it's been out for a while.

There's another group working on something like this on a larger scale: http://cs.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/
