Okay, I admit I'm new to modern PCs and Vista but I did manage to build the HD Video editing box detailed in My System so the old Win 98SE 1Ghz Althon with its 128Mb RAM and CRT monitor has been retired.
A Dell 3007WFP-HC was duly delivered from Scan yesterday and apart from squealing like a girl at the 30"-ness of this monster, it was just perfect in every way and worked straight out the box. I dived straight into Control Panel and cranked it up to native resolution. Simply stunning. Before closing I noticed the Dispay Adaptor was set to Generic PnP Monitor so I concluded that's why there was also a CD in the box. I ran Setup from the CD and for the next 4 hours I was subjected to looping restarts, BSODs and other evils in an attempt to get Vista64 stable again. I think it was probably due to a loading conflict of the monitor's USBcard reader drivers at startup as I had to disconnect the cable before I could get back to a working Desktop.
I've downloaded the latest software from Dell US but am loathe to install it until somebody can tell me what it is for and what it will do. One folder contains an ICC profile and the other one, Windows application software.
- Do I just run setup on the Apps and it will do something with the ICC profile or should I put the profile somewhere. Does the USB cable do more than just provide card reading (I've heard these Dells have OSD to choose scaling options, perhaps USB is needed here)?
- Should the monitor be recognised as a Dell in the Control Panel?
- It doesn't fire up from Vista Standby like my old CRT did. Will the Apps correct this?
Any other tips and tricks would also be appreciated ie. Is it better for the monitor to be set to do 1:1 scaling or should all scaling be left to my GTS? My Asus card came with several applications including "Splendid" video enhancement yet none of it seems capable of existing in a 64-bit environment. BTW, I'm using the latest 64-bit drivers from the nVidia site.
