Heck, I figure by the time I get the wampum together to afford my new video card, eVGA will have them in stock again.

    Re: Alternatives to 8800GT?

The GTS SSC is better than the GT by single digits percentages in most games. There are couple of exceptions such as Crysis at unplayable settings (>20&#37 and Lost Planet (about 15%). But most shows a difference within 10%. Unless the GTS SSC is a much better overclocker, I wouldn't pay more than the price of the GT + 10% for the GTS SSC.

I really need to order a video card to arrive before the weekend. I'm running out of options at the moment.

You could just save up and get an 8800GTX, that'll do the trick

wait! it's just a few days, anyway even if you order the nvidia card chances are it's not in stock, wait a week.

i understand roughly similar performance, but the cooler for the ati card is really quiet. cheaper card as well. wait a week!

It's just waiting until tomorrow really. A quick order as soon as you've looked over a review will be enough to get a 3870XT by the weekend I guess, if you choose next day. If you're hoping for a 8800GT by then it's not gonna happen. Dabs had some stock yesterday (or earlier today) and it disappeared within an hour or 2. There just isn't the stock to fulfil demand. Not here, not anywhere.

You'd need to have your head examined to get a GTX, £160 markup for a few extra FPS minus the media unit just isn't worth it.

Which would be the likeliest suppliers to stock the 3870 tomorrow? I've pretty much given up on an 8800GT at the moment. My budget is around 250GBP.

    Re: Alternatives to 8800GT?

Well OcUK were taking orders yesterday when the page went up 'accidently', apparently they'll honour those orders and will be shipped tonight for delivery tomorrow. You have to suspect the other usual suspects will have stock - Scan, Ebuyer, etc, but we'll not know until the NDA goes.

    Re: Alternatives to 8800GT?

Agreed - I would expect OcUK to be among the fastest, SCAN would be a good bet if you can catch their pickers on a good day - order as early as you can. Ebuyer and Dabs are also relatively quick as long as they have it in stock. CCLcomputers and microdirect are also worth scaning through tommorow lunchtime.

If you can't get hold of a 3870 tomorrow, and absolutely must have something by Friday, then I'd say the next best option would be to go for this.

    Re: Alternatives to 8800GT?

That generally means they have no stock but are expecting some. It says "Availability: In stock. Dispatched from and sold by xxxx." if they have stock in hand.
