Re: Recommend me a monitor

TN screens have poor vertical viewing angles so there's a noticeable colour shift between the top and bottom of the display. It's not particulaly strong and as most people have TN panels they can obviously live with it.

LCD pixels are made up of three sub-pixels (red, green and blue). On a TN these can display 64 shades each and on a VA/IPS panel they can display 256 colours each. So TN can display 192 actual colours while VA/IPS can display 768. These colours are situated close together so if you zoom out to the pixel level each pixel appears as if it can display 262144 colours for TN or 16.7 million for VA/IPS. TN then dithers using multiple pixels to fake the extra colours bringing it's total to either 16.2 or 16.7 million depending on the type of dithering. This does only apply to current S-PVA/A-MVA panels as some of the older PVA panels were 6-bit like TNs.

S-PVA panels have horizontal viewing angles that aren't quite as good as a TN and a black crush effect when viewed straight on (dark shades all get 'crushed' to the same shade of black)

The latest IPS panels have very few disadvantages. As far as I know they don't suffer any viewing angle problems. (while they're not completely constant they're not far off) The blackness of blacks isn't quite as good as other monitors but all monitors are inferior to a good TV in that respect.

Input lag seems to be caused by image processing - it's why monitors like the 2408 have quite while many of the cheaper monitors have little or none - so I would expect older monitors to have less in general than newer monitors as they should be less complicated.

The input lag on the dell is about 60ms. 50ms is 1/20th of a second. So although it's a lot compared to other monitors the biggest effect it's going to have is to make the monitor feel a bit sluggish - you probably won't see the delay consciously.

As for concentrating on the game it doesn't work like that with response time/input lag since you can't be concentrating on something until it's displayed clearly on your monitor.

If your monitors are lasting longer than your keyboards then you're buying some very unreliable keyboards. With LCD being quite a new technology (look at all the manufacturing defects and problems) I wouldn't expect LCD reliability to be that high in general.

Anyway, for specific monitors the BenQ G2400W seems to be pretty highly rated - it's a TN panel at around £250 and meets all your requirements.

1. i've got both tn and s-pva panel monitors. horizontal and vertical viewing angles are better on my pva, by a long way as well.

2. response time and input lag have different effects. response time will cause ghosting, which is just basically blurring. whereas input lag is a delay in seeing the cursor on the screen move when you compare it to your actual movements. as long as the ghosting isn't too bad you won't notice it. input lag on the hand is more of a problem than ghosting, since a higher lag will mean a longer delay in the screen showing the movement instead of just a blurring effect. all monitors will have input lag, and for the most its not noticeable.

3. LCDs aren't that new.... but you're right in saying a keyboard will last longer, but a monitor is much more of a bigger purchase. you can get a keyboard for about a fiver, but a monitor is going to cost a lot more than that! i was referring to the components of the computer, not the peripherals (even though a monitor can be considered one...)

2. Response time is the time it takes for the pixels to change from one picture to another, think of it as a faster version of those slideshows where one picture fades into another - there is a time between the change starting and the details of the new picture becoming clear. Response times on good monitors these days are <10ms for the entire transition so it's of much less of a concern than input lag - but for those doubting the effects on input lag it's proof that you can see something on that timescale - although here you have an easy reference (the half faded-out previous image) to compare it to.

3. I don't know about a fiver but you can get a decent keyboard for £15. However, I would imagine there's at least as many people buying £30+ keyboards as their are buying premium monitors since they cost less and last longer. If the monitor is a component because it's essential for the operation of the system then the keyboard and mouse must be too.

Re: Recommend me a monitor

i appreciate what you're trying to say about the monior vs keyboard/mouse. but can you not understand that purchasing a monitor requires a more hefty outlay than either a keyboard or mouse? if you take an average person, i think they'd be more inclined to replace a keyboard rather than a monitor.... i can confidently say that i have had more keyboards/mice than monitors. the reason? not because they have broken and haven't lasted as long, but because they are a hell of a lot cheaper to buy.

a monitor/keybaord/mouse are essential for a system, but which out of them would you budget for the most and also take more consideration of? i know if i bought a keyboard and wasn't happy with it then i would be in less of a state compared with buying the wrong monitor. that was what i was referring to, the cost in addition to end user satisfaction, not the importance of one over another in respect to having a functional system.

That 26" screen.. when it's finally in stock anywhere is what I have my eye on. It looks to be a winner but I think I'll wait for a review before I pull the trigger.

There is the dell 2707WFP which I was always interested in but the samsung with its great range of inputs and freeview etc.. has my vote

Re: Recommend me a monitor

haha whats my budget is a bit of a rough question, at the moment its anything within reason

Im thinking of wall mounting a screen due to where in the room it'll be, im also looking at 26-32" TVs as if i wallmount it it'll be a few feet further away - the only problem on the TV end is without paying alot id be limited to 1366x768 resolution (from the looks of things) which wouldnt be big enough

Its such a hard decision, ive been toying with what screen to buy for the past 2-3 months and i just cant seem to decide, one minute i want to spend alot of money, the next not so much, then i decide i want good viewing angles, then i decide it wont matter GAAAAAHHH

EDIT:
contrast ratios not great but any opinions on this:Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

i think the ideal screen for me would be (ignoring panel type) 26"+ HDMI/HDCP, 2000:1+ contrast ratio for under £400........think im living in a dream world though

due to almost pulling my hair out trying to decide on a screen i decided to go back to the original plan and ive ordered the hyundai W240D-TN

I'm sure it'll be more than capable of what i want it to do, it cant be worse than my laptop screen or cheapo work 22" screen

even got the afternoon off tomorow to play with it lol

lol, so much stress deciding on stuff like this, know what it feels like, gay im sure it will be fine, most monitors are very good and after a little research its hard to buy a bad one.

would be good if you could give a quick review and some picys....

glad you got the hyundai! you'll like the load of inputs, i'm planning on hooking up a ps3 to my monitor when i get one. you won't notice the disadvantages/advantages compared to a pva panel unless you've used one before or you're ultra picky. suppose ignorance is sometimes bliss....

one other thing, keep the microfibre cloth handy.... the stand attracts dust and fingerprints really easily, it does look the part though! hope you enjoy it
