Out of the current non pro top end 24" screens, I rate the HP and NEC 24WMGX3 (assuming you can get a good deal on the NEC) with the A00 2408 a distant third.

If you can afford to wait then the LED backlight screens should be around shortly.
The LED backlight screen would be the best choice but you can keep on waiting for new stuff to come out!!!. You buy something today and within 6 months it's out of date!! oh well.

Dell 2408 A01 it is then. well I think it is!!

Re: Best Monitor to purchase 24" to 28" max £500

Even though I still think that 2408WFP is a good all round panel the HP LP2475w is probably better for absolute colour accuracy as it has an H-IPS panel. However all these panels do need to be calibrated before use.

The NEC MultiSync 24WMGX3 is another good monitor but cost over 500 quid. The HP LP2475W is £380 from Ebuyer and IMHO is a viable alternative to the 2408wfp which cost £415 from Ebuyer.

Re: Best Monitor to purchase 24" to 28" max £500

I've got 2 hyundai 24" W240D, which can be had from ebuyer for about £300 - Link Here, superb for gaming and HD video, cant fault either panel. Colours are fantastic, rich and deep, blacks/contrast is excellent, gas lift (so very easy to adjust height). Every connection on the back you'll need (HDMI, Component, DVI, VGA, mic, headphone). Over £100 cheaper than the Dell with a faster response time.

Generally, the W240D seems to get better reviews than the Dell, though I've not used a dell so I'm not in a position to compare. I would have no hesitation in recommending the W240D, worthy of serious consideration.

It's probably worth noting that the Hyundai monitor mentioned above uses a TN panel whilst the HP and others use IPS/MVA/PVA's.

Re: Best Monitor to purchase 24" to 28" max £500

The LP2475W is an IPS screen whereas the 2408WFP is not(it has as PVA LCD).

Here are some reviews for both screens:

    http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/hp_lp2475w.htm

    http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_2408wfp.htm

You will need to calibrate your screen too if you are doing image editing. Somethng like a Pantone Huey or Colorvision Spyder 3 would do the job.

I use a Monaco Optix XR for my screen.

If I was doing imaging work I would get the HP LP2475w for £380 and a Colorvision Spyder 3 to calibrate it for £100.
