    8800GS replacement cooler

Bought an 8800GS on ebay with a fan that only seems to work at 100,000% speed, meaning it sounds awful considering my computer is basically inaudible over the background noise in my room, I did try to replace the fan with an old 6800 based quadro fan, but it is a slightly different size, and I can't figure out a way of fixing it in properly.
So I need to find a cheap, reasonably quiet heatsink, or even waterblock for the 8800gs, any suggestions?

Buy a suitable cooler and / or run the fan from a speed controller?

Could you try to fit an 80mm fan over that? Also, what do you use your 8800GS for? Any intense gaming?

You seem to have missed the point, I am looking for suggestions on a replacement cooler, as for the controler, the bearing on this fan has gone or something, it will only run at 100%, and can't even spin up at anything less.

Folding, physx, thing will never render a pixel in it's lifetime with me but will be loaded to 100% most of the time it is on. and an 80mm fan wouldn't work, my sound card is too close to fit it there and have room to suck properly, and that is the only place it can go

Well, I don't think you described it clearly Have you had a good look at the fan that is fitted to it, I've found in the past that little fans like this in not so well looked after machines tend to get a load of fluff around the spindle and it make it hard for them to turn. Usually you can clean them and give it a little bit of wd40 to get them working again.

    Re: 8800GS replacement cooler

I had a 8800GS and my one was the XFX Alpha Dog Edition, I searched around and found that the fan runs at 100% because it was a 2pin fan or something so you could not change the fan speed with software. What I did was get a Zalman Fan Mate controller for a few quid off ebay and just plugged the fan into it and it did a great job of keeping the fan under control.

I could have been a little more specific I suppose lol, however I am sure it is a bearing issue with the fan, as it feels lumpy when moving it round, and there is no dust buildup and a squirt of wd40 didn't solve it.

Mine is a xfx 8800gs, but the fan is a 4pin one, not that it matters as it has had it.

    Re: 8800GS replacement cooler

I'm not sure why it's a 4 pin one but AFAIK every XFX 8800GS suffered from the issue of 100% fan speed so XFX even sent out free fan controllers to the owners (obviously this was a while back though so it's not done anymore).

If the fan was faulty I don't think it'd spin at 100% either. I still say you try get a cheap cheap cheap fan controller and save money and hassle if you find one that works with a 4pin fan. (It shouldn't be a 4 pin as I just searched again and they were all 2 pin fans)

    Re: 8800GS replacement cooler

4pin :/ I assume they changes the fan and/or the cooler at some point after that, as you can see though, there isn't anything clogging it up, and oiling the bearings has only made it slightly quieter.
I should clarify, that it isn't spinning up to full speed itself, I am having to force it to, it simply won't spin if left to it's own devices, and even at 100% it takes a bit of persuasion to start up.
