    Recommend me a new GPU!

Hokay, it's coming round to that time again: I finally have budget to blow on a shiny new GPU over the course of the next few weeks. As I've not been keeping too much of an eye on the current/upcoming market I was looking at the GTX460 cards, but was pondering what's about to come over the horizon from AMD. Currently running a single HD4870 512Mb, so you have a baseline as to where I'm going from. Gaming on Dell 2709W at 1920x1200.

Budget is £200-ish, £250 absolute max and I'm looking to have something installed in my machine within the next fortnight. Help me spend my money and keep the economy afloat.

    HD5870.

It'd push your budget, but there was an overclocked XFX 5870 on Today Only on Scan last Thursday for £252.

    Desktop - i7 930, XMS3 6x2GB DDR3, X58A-UD3R (rev2), 2xHD5870 1GB (CrossFireX), Crucial C300 64GB , 2x2TB WD Caviar Green, Corsair 650TX

I'd be very tempted to wait and see what the ati 6xxx cards are like which are supposedly out in the next few weeks.

Although if you're desperate to get something right now then gtx460 doesn't seem like all that much of an upgrade from the 4870 you've got now. The 5870 seems about the minimum to get a decent boost if you're going to spend that kind of money.

Wait it out, especially with that budget.

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: Recommend me a new GPU!

Hmmm, 5850 is probably the immediate choice with up to £250 to spend, but given that AMDs new cards are rumoured to be due within 2 weeks, I'd have to side with the "wait it out" brigade on this one Hey, it's only 14 days, and if the first batch of 6000s are any good it should force some price "readjustments" shortly after release - perhaps that 5870 will end up easily within budget in 3 weeks time...

Re: Recommend me a new GPU!

If you musthaveitnow then scan's got an XFX HD 5850 on today only for £193.86

or a gtx460 1gb (not currently on today only) £165-£180ish
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-G...s-DL-DVI-mHDMI
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-M...2x-DVI-I-mHDMI (good cooler and exellent msi overclocking software)
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-E...DVI-I-MiniHDMI (evga also does some nice utilities and the only company to still carry 10year warranties, note: not all EVGA cards do, you need to check the product number, if it ends in -AX, -AR, -A1, -A2, -A3, -ER, -E1, -WR, or -W1 and regestered within 30days, if it ends in -KR or -EK then it's 3 years and if it ends in -ET then it's only 2 years)

Go much lower than these are you'll not be much better off than your current card (although higher memory will help a bit at that res)

Re: Recommend me a new GPU!

As suspected I think I'll wait it out in that case - best case scenarion th 6 series stuff hits and is well priced for my budget or cause a price drop on the 5870, worst case nothing happens. Only reason I have time limits is that I've agreed to sell my 4870 to Watforddude at the end of the month

I guess it's time to start keeping an eye on leaks and benchmarks then

Re: Recommend me a new GPU!

Once the launch prices have settled down the HD6870 should be under £180 again.

However, the GTX470 is available for under £190 now and is also quite a decent card but with reasonably higher power consumption:
