Best deals youve seen for 1gb graphic cards ?

    http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-P...7&sr=8-1-fkmr0

this is my vote so far ..

I got it wrong in my last post you see i thought 512mb would be enough for my needs - but apparently not so for games like like Witcher 2 , so it looks like this would be good investment instead .

512mb (4870 in my case) is enough to run TW2 smoothly on high settings, which looks fab. If it's not smooth for you then you're CPU limited. Just getting any old 1gb card might be a bad move - the 460SE for example is quite weak.

For the wife's computer we just picked up a 1GB gtx560 from Scan at £138, which is much better value for money IMHO, and better suited to TW2.

The 5870/6870 1GB cards for a similar price would also be good.

im try to budget myself below £100 , from what someone told be i might be as well getting that given the 15.00 difference , but what i dont get it why the 460 would be still that high, if their selling the 560 at that price ??

Mmmm, £28 . Don't worry too much about memory, decent GPU is the priority.

You can get an HD5850 1GB for around £100 excluding delivery:

    http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...roductId=44679

It will probably be around £110 delivered.

A GTX460 1GB can be had for slightly more:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/269202

However,AFAIK the HD5850 1GB will be faster in many games.

If you cannot spend more than £100, I would look at an HD5830 1GB:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/265356

I assume you have a decent PSU.

My current pc is only 2.8 GHZ with 2046MB ram
I just thought there might be chance i could use one of these cards in the meantime while i either buy or consider building a newone.

Im not an expert far from it, terms like cpu , gpu arent 2nd nature though i know the first well but
PSU and AMT I do not.

What kind of processor is it? 2.8ghz could be okay, or could be terrible. Need to know the make and model really. If it's a Pentium 4 for example, forget trying to run The Witcher 2 smoothly.

If you're not sure, go start->run and type in dxdiag, then copy the information in the first page.

Dont know whether you bein sarcastic or not here - like i said im no expert so if its gives you your jollies so be it.

I dont really want to know what every individual component means compared to the next - is it faster , is it dependable , is it cheaper , is it upgradable will work with software I want to run i.e. games or other future games / sound editors / 3d monitors

these are the sort of question i ask.

Ive never built my own pc before so I have no idea what all the relative abbreviations mean , nor do i want to ,unless its relative to what i need - cost being one of them , and why that £28 card above thats 1gb is only £28.0 0 while there are others that are almost £200.

No its duo core pentium , which might be worse for all i know , where do i find the chip model ?

    System Manufacturer: Compaq-Presario
    System Model: RR505AA-ABU SR2125UK
    BIOS: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG

thats all i see under dxdiag

Ive been using GeForce 8500 GT to run recent games like Mafia 2 though ok .

That's not worse, don't worry. Probably the E5500 chip, bit low on cache, but not a terrible processor. However it won't run The Witcher 2 smooth on higher settings, so don't waste too much on a graphics card (GPU) - but you're not planning to

Cat's question about PSU related to the power supply unit in your computer. Graphics cards can slug quite a lot, so when you're upgrading it's necessary to check what the current unit is and see if it'll cope.

You're going to have to open up the computer to put the graphics card in anyway, so I'd suggest you open it up in advance and look at the side of the PSU (looks like a cube about 14cmx14cmx10cm at the top or bottom of the case - with your power chord plugged into the back of it) - there should be some information on a sticker - the best info is a table listing the different voltages etc. - post that info here if you can. If not, the make and model should be on a sticker somewhere.

Ah ok , i think i remember now from that last time i opened it up .

So then it seems id be better just forgetting that idea and going the fully monty for new machine - which just means more learning curve or buying something that has already hand picked like this combo deal [URL="http://www.scan.co.uk/todayonly/index.aspx"]http://www.scan.co.uk/todayonly/index.aspx[/URL

If CAT is willing to send / sell me his copy of windows it would certianly makeup for overheads- assuming its cheaper or free of course

I already have ext drive /writer that gets the job done though it would be nice to have less wires .

Re: Best deals youve seen for 1gb graphic cards ?

There does come a point where you chase upgrades with decreasing returns and it's worth getting a new computer. That combo deal is very good - covers just about everything with well matched components. You don't need an extra copy of windows - that combo comes with it.

But it's a lot of money just for one game - if you play other things as well it's worth it. Otherwise you could wait for The Witcher 2 to come out on console.
