Would there be much discernable difference between the 1GB VRAM models and their 2GB counterparts?

Re: Nvidia GTX 560 ti vs AMD HD 6950

I made this choice a few months ago, went for a Gigabyte HD6950 1GB OC and I am very happy with it. I chose the 1Gb card because it had the custom cooler installed and because the 1Gb variant performs pretty much the same as the 2Gb for my resolution(1920x1080).

The HD6950 fits in my case easily(Coolermaster CM690) which has about 31cm clearance for graphics cards. I haven't measured directly but it's safe to say the HD6950 is less than 30cm long.

I also prefer the regular driver release schedule of AMD over the sporadic release of nVidia drivers and dislike the fact that nVidia throttle their cards when they detect a stress test.

The 2gb will make a difference only at resolutions above 1080p and for multi monitor gaming.. So the vram choice depends on it.

Unfortunately gigabyte cards are not avialable in my region.
Also i am scared to go for an oced card as it requires more juice to run and i only have a corsair 450vx, so i want to play safe...
The question regarding PSU is still open... can anybody tell me if the corsair PSU is good enough to handle an oced gtx 560 ti?? or an oced hd 6950??

Re: Nvidia GTX 560 ti vs AMD HD 6950

Been trying to make a decision on this for a while now. Looking at the MSI 2GB 560Ti Twin Frozr and the 2GB 6950 Twin Frozr. I reckon the performance is about the same and am going for the 560ti because it is quite a bit cheaper at the moment and from what I've read the Nvidia drivers for BF3 are a bit better at the moment (plus always gone Nvidia before). If there is a price drop on the 6950 though it could make the choice more difficult as I will likely get a second card when the time requires it and the 6950 scale better.

    That's a shame

As for the PSU you will be at the upper end of it's capabilities. During games it would probably exceed 80% load; having said that the AMD card is better in terms of power draw. I think you should look at the 1Gb version of the HD6950, it uses 50W less than the 2Gb GTX560ti and isn't that much slower.

The PSU *should* be able to cope with your system. I say that tentatively because I can't be sure but according to reviews of the cards showing the power draw below 450W and the PSU having the ability to support 30A on it's 12v rail it seems as though it *should* be fine.

Re: Nvidia GTX 560 ti vs AMD HD 6950

The VX450W is closer to a 500W PSU than a 450W one IIRC. I have run a mildly overclocked Q6600 and and an HD5850 1GB at HD5870 1GB clockspeeds off a Shuttle 450W SFF PSU.

I think the VX450W should be fine with an HD6950. However, being that the OP is India, the ambient temperature will be higher though unless the OP has air conditioning. IIRC,the VX450W is rated upto 50C though.

Re: Nvidia GTX 560 ti vs AMD HD 6950

The decision got harder for me at least. The 2GB MSI Twin FrozrII 560Ti and the 2GB MSI Twin Frozr III 6950 have less than £10 between them today. If it stays like that I am leaning towards the 6950 version of the Twin Frozr, especially if apparently it will play BF3 better - though when the time comes they will no doubt be very similar.

Re: Nvidia GTX 560 ti vs AMD HD 6950

I'll be getting a 2500k but I still think I'll go with the 2GB MSI Twin Frozr III 6950. Out performs the 1GB version of the 560Ti Twin Frozr II in most games (and the 2GB version of the card is the same specs but with 1GB extra RAM). Currently only £10 separates them and with BF3 in mind I think I'm going with the 6950.

I have decided to go for 'Sapphire HD 6950 1gb Dirt 3' card as it has a dual fan cooler and a shorter custom pcb... I am assuming my system should be able to handle it. So will be buying them in another 2 days and will update on how well it works out

    Thanks all for your replies...
