Re: Anyone Know When The Next Gen Nvidia Cards Are Being Released

Bit off topic but I am not going to make a new thread just to ask a quick question

Should I wait and see if the price drops even more for the HD 6850? At scan the VTX3D is now £83.62. Why is it so much cheaper than Sapphire and ASUS? Will it drop even more? A couple of weeks ago it was well into £90.

Is it due to the new release of the 7xxx series?

Don't think you'll get a better card for £80 tbh.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

The Asus card which was around £88 is better, but for around £84 an HD6850 1GB is a fantastic card.

Re: Anyone Know When The Next Gen Nvidia Cards Are Being Released

Well I sold my HD 4870 for £60 in the end, so might pre-order the VTX3D I don't think buying another brand will make much of a difference to me, besides the VTX3D looks nicer Also will be good for future upgrades to my monitor

But yeah for £80 seems a good deal, I'm just hoping it won't drop too heavily in price after I buy it

I do agree with you, i thought it looked like an M myself.

I can't imagine them comparing two MSAA's though? And surely they wouldn't continue their awful naming tradition with a new form of MxAA, would they?

Don't see why not. MXAA - combination of MSAA and FXAA?

There was a big hoo ha about AMD doing this last year, the green corner were mocking this iirc? Now NV are doing this!

I think the phrase is fleeced someone for £60 (how did you manage that?). Great upgrade for 23 quid though.

Re: Anyone Know When The Next Gen Nvidia Cards Are Being Released

Well the card is near new, and I took postage and fees into account.

Na a lot of people are selling HD 4890s for near £100 on there.

Yeah hopefully the upgrade will be worth it!

Re: Anyone Know When The Next Gen Nvidia Cards Are Being Released

This is another post from the HC reviewer on XS:

    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...=1#post5069322

So,maybe the 25% improvement in games performance over an HD7970 3GB mentioned earlier in that thread is true?? He seems to be hinting this.

It would make the GTX680 around 36% faster(as I suggested earlier if HC review figures are used) than a GTX580.

    Edit!!

    He mentions the following:

"AMD is currently grappling with the heat, power consumption and die space (albeit at on a more efficient process technology) restrictions that NVIDIA went through with Fermi. "

I wonder if he has considered the HD7800 series against the HD7900 series though as the former seems more efficient relative to its performance:

Re: Anyone Know When The Next Gen Nvidia Cards Are Being Released

One odd question, how long should I expect a graphics card to last? Everyone says 1 year for extreme use, 3 years max for gaming use.

But isn't it just a chip, like a CPU, wouldn't a graphics card last years as long as the heat is down?

Just wondering because I don't want to go with a good GPU,only to find by the time I upgrade my monitor in the future that the GPU is gone

Every AMD card I've had is still going strong - they're obsolete before they break, and they've had quite a lot of abuse in my cases! Current cards is a 4870 that's something like four years old and still going strong - and that's a card that runs HOT.

I've had less luck with nVidia (Geforce 2ti ultra died. 3ti500 still working, 6800Gt died, 8800gt died), but that's probably coincidental.

Re: Anyone Know When The Next Gen Nvidia Cards Are Being Released

I have had my 8800GTS 320MB for 5 years and I use it daily for games, it still works now, runs skyrim and starcraft etc. I don't know who has suggested just 1 year for extreme use. You may need to upgrade every year if you wish to run the newest games on full graphics on a 1600p screen, but I don't see a reason for a graphics card to stop working after just 1 year.

I had a 6600gt before that, and used that daily for a couple of years before upgrading, and it didn't seem to be breaking at all.

When people reply to 'how long will a GPU last' they're probably thinking you're asking 'how long will it be capable of playing recent games at reasonable settings' or similar. As for how long it will last before physically failing, it depends on the card but heat is a major killer, insufficiently cooled RAM/VRMs more commonly than the GPU itself IME. Properly cooled and run within spec, components should last well over 10 years, but there's not a huge amount of data because, as kalniel says, they will become obsolete long before they stop working provided there are no faults.

Re: Anyone Know When The Next Gen Nvidia Cards Are Being Released

Ahhh that makes sense. No wonder my first ever card died the next few days when I removed and put the heatsink back on the VRMs probably didn't get contact.

Well with the reference design (VTX3D) and good cooling then theres no real reason why it won't go out after years? I am bit mad on cooling, so cooling shouldn't be an issue really, my HD 4870 never sees past 50 any more.

Thanks guys now I really don't have anything to worry about, this card will last years for me, I am not a big gamer on the latest titles, every now and again a game will pop up that looks good (BF3), or Crysis.

Yep going to go for the HD 6850 sounds like good card and for me it'll last years
