Is the CPU actually at 1.8ghz, or is it an 1800+?

When you say you crank up the graphics, how high are the graphics (resolution, AA, etc.)

If you have turned it up high, then an Athlon XP 1800+ (assuming that's what you have) and the 512mb of RAM are more likely to be causing it than the 6800.

Antialiasing it removes jaged edges from the graphics but costs you frame rates...

Can you do me a favor? instal Fraps and run it before you launch HL 2

    http://www.fraps.com/download.htm

It will tell you how many frams per second are being displayed, then tell us...

just fyi - you don't need fraps for hl2 - just enable the dev console and type net_graph 1.

i have a similar system, just more mem and a faster cpu. and i still had the stuttering in hl2, but after reading around i found out that it was the autosave which was doing it to me, so i went into hl2 folder found where it saves the autosaves and made them read only, this stopped the stuttering for me, maybe it will work for u as well, only drawback is u have to save manually alot.
