From what I've seen, noticeably faster in unreal 2003/2004 and HL2, noticeably slower in Doom 3, barely noticeable differences elsewhere.

The x800s also have a playable AA setting over 4x. All of the AA values beyond 4x on my overclocked 6800GT slow down any recent game by unacceptable ammounts at higher resolutions.

The X800XT is a more expensive card than the X800XL though. If you could get an X800XT for the price of an XL I'd say go for it, but you can't.

I find if you just adjust the resolution to whatever your monitor is comfortable with and leave all the driver settings alone the 6800GT looks better, and I do like the Quake/Doom type games. I always try to get my customers to go ATI though because I have fewer problems with (and complaints about) them.

    Link???

And what are they selling the XL for?

Every retailer in the states sells the XT for 30-50% more than the XL.

There are many many different brands and models of ATI X800's. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples. Make sure they have the same interface (AGP, PCI-E) and that they are retail to retail, not retail to OEM.

according to an issue of pc gamer the x800xt is a little but faster and single slot form factor but unless you have a diddy case size shouldn't be an issue, the clock speeds on the 6800 gt are a bit slower but it uses shader modle 3, and with the 6800 gt you could go sli with 2 and that would piss all over an x800xt.
