Dead PC? Any suggestions?

Hi All,

Just got up this morning to find my PC appears to be completely dead. When i push the power button, absolutely nothing happens. No fans, no nothing.

There's a light on the motherboard that is still lit so I'm not inclined to think it's the PSU, though I'll see if I can swap it out today and eliminate that from the equation. It's a fairly decent antec one(cost about £90 as I recall) so I'd be surprised if it was that.

I've removed the RAM(got 2 x 1Gb) and tried them separately and will be stripping the rest of the components out of the my system shortly.

I've also unplugged the power cable and left it for 15 minutes.

Has anyone got any other suggestions of stuff I could try?

I've been wanting an excuse to upgrade to a Core2 for a while but I'd have preferred the opportunity to do it at my leisure instead of rushing. Looks like I'm stuck on the laptop for a few days

I've had something similar:- motherboard light on, fans and hardisk were running, but no boot..............It was the PSU.

I'm gonna shoot out now and see if I can pick up another PSU to test. I'll be less than impressed if it is the PSU as this was the first time I invested in (what I thought was) a decent PSU.

I've stripped the system, tried different RAM and CPU as well with no joy.

Well, excalibur2 was right it was the PSU. Just been down to PC world (only place open on Sunday round here) and bought a £45 PSU, plugged it in and it works.

I wouldn't mind, but the antec that I bought wasn't cheap and now I've got to either chuck it or RMA it. Grrrrr..

At least I can upgrade to a Core2 at my leisure now.

Gone are the days when a PSU would last for ever, as used say on a P200 with simple graphic card.

How long you had the PSU? Antec do some pretty long warranty periods so you might find its still covered.

Nah, I don't expect stuff to last for years but I've only had the PSU 18 months which I don't consider reasonable.

I had a P100 which lasted 12 years and it only died last year(it was still in use if you can believe it ), not a single hardware failure in all that time. It may have been better used as a door stop but you can't knock that longevity.

I've emailed Antec, I think it came with a 3 year warranty as I recall so I'll see what I can do with it. I need to replace the one I bought today with a quieter version anyway, perhaps they'll have a reasonably fast turnaround.
