    Question strange problem

hi, i recently bought some new components for my pc..

    -AMD 64 X2 dual core 3800+ (am2)
    -Asus GeForce 8600 GTS 256mb gddr3
-DFi infinity nF Ultra II (am2)
    -Geil 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800mhz ultra low latency ddr2

basically everything bar the hard disks and dvd drive.

after installing the components and installing windows xp, everything ran smoothly for around 2 weeks.. when it randomly bluescreened and then gave a cpu frequency error during post.

now its taking a long time to post after its powered up..
and sometimes reboots straight after without even attempting to boot to windows.

sometimes it manages to boot widnows up.. but then shortly after blue screens and reboots.

occasionally it also freezes whilst in the bios.

    anyone got any ideas?

    thanks, neil.

did you make any hardware/software changes after those 2 weeks?

what is the temperature of the cpu/chipset/etc like?

can you read anything on the BSOD?

have you tried reseting the CMOS, and doing 'load safe/default settings' and see how you get on?

It could well be a temperature issue, what with it being all hot and sunny now, or something could've worked loose...

you could always try re-seating the memory (ie taking it out, putting it back in again) and running something like memtest86

nope didnt make any hardware changes.. bar maybe plugging in a usb device etc.. as for software i installed games etc if thts what you mean?

i was playing oblivion when it bsod the first time.

the temperatures are all below 60c.. not hot enough for the max temp shutdown to engage anyway..

the BSOD just flashes up then reboots instantly

i did try resetting the cmos, including the fail safe defaults, and the optimal settings.. which sometimes caused a "cpu frequency error" or something to that extent during post.

i have tried just using one dimm in each of the four availible slots, doesnt seem to make a difference..

also i unplugged all of the drives to see if it made a difference, which it didnt :\

the fault seems to be intermittent.. as in occasionally it will boot (slowly) into windows.. where i can use windows for a short time untill it blue screens..

but other times it will just reboot after post or thereabouts :\

    some things to do:

1.have you tried downloading memtest86 and burning that to a cd, and running an hour or so worth to see if its a memory error

    2. change the 'automatic restart' option (rightclick my computer->properties->advanced->Startup and Recover) see:

This will mean you can read (and write down) what the BSOD is all about and hopefully we can go from there...

    3. is there a new bios out for your motherboard?

    4. have you done a windows update that may have caused some problem, go to the windows update website, and check the 'update history' and see if theres anything there
