    8800GT Problems

    Hi there,

I've just purchased the MSI GeForce 8800GT 512MB O/C, however after putting it in my system I no longer get any picture, not even the BIOS report before windows loads, and something (either the graphics card, or possibly the hard drive), sounds like it's struggling to start. However, as I still have sound I can hear Windows starting up. I'm thinking it's possible my mother board isn't compatible, an ASUS M2V-TVM. Another cause might be the PSU I purchased with it on he advice of a staff member, a Xilence 600W Gaming Edition (Xilence 600W Gaming Edition PSU - Aria Technology), bought against my better judgement I might add, although I was being rushed! Or alternatively the graphics card could just be a dud, as I have read this has happened with some 8800GT's.

As such, I'd greatly appreciate any advice anyone has

Sorry to be so patronising, but have you tried both of the DVI thingies on the back?

And do you have another DVI cable you could try? Those are the two most straightforward things I can think of.

After that, you're down to trying it in another system. I'm sure the power would be fine. Could possibly even be the monitor... is it plugged in? Switched on? Check all external connections first, it's easy and fun! (Well, fun compared to opening up the machine and doing stuff with a screwdriver)

Thanks for the reply, don't worry bout sounding patronising, I can be a bit daft sometimes if i'm honest...

I have checked everything, but to no avail! I'm thinking it's the motherboard, I did read somewhere that the M2V's aren't great for compatibility with the 8800GT...

This happened to me with my P5K-E and my 2900XT, at the moment i'm using the DVI->VGA dongle and using the VGA cable for my monitor. It used to be fine with DVI but it doesn't want to display an image that way anymore! It'll only do it with VGA... very odd.

    Re: 8800GT Problems

I've had a similar problem a couple of times before, although I didn't even get sound from Windows.

I found my problem to be that the graphics card was shorting out on the chassis, or at least it had pushed the motherboard down far enough to short out on the chassis.

I have an Nvidia geforce 8800 512 gt oc2 card and when the computer first starts up the fan makes a rather irritating whining sound but this stops once the computer gets to the OS loading screen. When I inserted it for the first time I experienced what you are describing, however upon taking everything apart and out and then putting it back in again (making sure the motherboard were sitting correctly and not touching the chassis) it worked fine.

This has also happened with an older graphics card as well.

Try taking the motherboard out, making sure it is correctly seated on the little jumpers that come with computer cases and then inserting the graphics card gently.

It's gotta be worth a try, just need to get my hands on some thermal paste... I'll let you know how I get on...

Does anyone know of any incompatibility issues with the motherboard and the 8800GT?

And could someone confirm the PSU is suitable? I'm not too clued up on PSU's unfortunately..
